Tips for Travel to Northern Tibet

There is a large depopulated zone in Northern Tibet, both the transportation and accommodation there are not so convenient. But the magnificent natural landscapes and mysterious Shangshung Kingdom Relic attract a large number of tourists interested in adventure. Tourists who’ve traveled to Northern Tibet said that this place is one of the most charming zones in Tibet. The numerous lakes present a picturesque natural landscapes composed of beautiful water and charming grassland for visitors. With severe natural environment and climate condition, Northern Tibet is not so suitable for human beings, but it is the paradise for many wild animals, including the Mongolian gazelle, antelopes, cranes and wild yaks.

The ancient Shangshung Kingdom created its own history and culture in Northern Tibet. Its relic attracts a large number of visitors especially interested in the Tibetan history. Northern Tibet is the cradle land of the primitive religion on Tibet Plateau – Bon. Tourists here would have the chance to enjoy a special religion culture which is quite different from the Buddhism culture in the other regions in Tibet.

Tips for Travel to Northern Tibet – Transportation

First of all, tourists planning to travel to Northern Tibet should collect information regarding the transportation. The Heihe-Ngari Highway stretches across the southern part of Northern Tibet, but there is no shuttle bus running on this highway. Tourists planning a visit to Northern Tibet are strongly suggested to rent a vehicle and hire a guide in Lhasa so as to better enjoy the amazing natural scenery through out the journey.

Generally, tourists planning to travel to Northern Tibet from Lhasa would like to have a night halt at Namtso Lake – one of the three holy lakes in Tibet. It should be noted that Lake Namtso enjoys a much higher altitude than Lhasa City, tourists are strongly suggested to spend a few days in Lhasa City for acclimation, or it is easy to get attacked by some high altitude sickness symptoms. Spend a night by Namtso Lake, visitors will have the chance to appreciate the breathtaking sunset view and sunrise view if there is a good weather condition.

Tourists visiting Northern Tibet will have the chance to witness large herds of cranes in Shenzha Natural Reserve. The rare visited Serintso Lake must leave tourists a deep impression and its fascinating lake view always make visitors be reluctant to leave. The road condition in the north of Serintso Lake is pretty poor, it is even not a gravel surfaced road. To avoid be stuck in the soil road, tourists are strongly suggested to visit this region in the rainy season.

The relic of Shangshung Kingdom is located in the east of Dangre Yumtso. Tourists here should note that the vehicles couldn’t go further more after arriving in the village in the east of the lake. The relic is about 16 kilometers away from this small village. Visitors have to leave enough time for trekking to that mysterious destination.
