There are numerous famous lakes in Tibet, including the Namtso Lake, Yamdrok Lake, Mapam Yumtso, Lhamo-latso, Peigutso, etc. It is well worth to pay a visit to Peigutso Lake though it is not as famous as Namtso Lake or Yamdrok Yumtso. Tourists who've been to Peigutso Lake are always impressed by its amazing lake view with the breathtaking inverted reflection of Mt. Shishapangma. The sound of the roaring Yarlung Zangbo also adds more charm to the rare-visited lake.

Travel to Peigutso Lake in Tibet – Brief Introduction of Peigutso Lake

Peigutso Lake is located in Nyalam County in Shigatse Prefecture. It is about 250 kilometers away from Tingri County Seat. Covers an area of more than 300 square kilometers, Peigutso Lake is the largest lake in Shigatse Prefecture. Peigutso Lake is one of the largest inland brackish-water lakes in southern Tibet. It is only about 55 kilometers away from the Mt. Shishapangma (one of the most famous peaks on Himalaya Mountains) in the south east. Peigutso Lake and Yarlung Zangbo River is separated by the mountains in the south. The lake surface is about 200 meters higher than the surface of Yarlung Zangbo River. Peigutso Lake enjoys a pretty open terrain though it is surrounded by mountains on three sides. There is rich fish resource in the lake for there is good climate here. Tourists travel to Peigutso Lake in the good seasons might have the chance to witness the wild animals living around the lake, such as the wild horses, Tibetan kiangs, Tibetan antelopes, wild cranes, yellow ducks and green ducks.

Travel to Peigutso Lake in Tibet – Tips & Best Season

Tourists planning to travel to Peigutso Lake could only book a tailor-made tour from the local Tibet tour operators in Lhasa. There is no group tour to Peigutso Lake for there are only a small number of tourists interested in this rare-visited lake currently. Generally, tourists could rent a SUV in Lhasa and drive to Peigutso Lake via Shigatse, Latze, Saga and Gilong. Tourists traveling to Peigutso Lake and especially interested in the mountain view of Shishapangma could pay a visit to Gyiaji Ferry via Saga County Seat. That ferry would be opened to tourists between 10:00 a.m. – 18:30 p.m. in winter and 9:30 a.m.-19:00 in summer. The clear view of Shishapangma would rush into your eyes soon after you drive out of Saga County Seat if there is good visibility.

The road to Peigutso Lake has been asphalted in recent years. Tourists don't need to be over worried about the road condition. It is said that Peigutso Lake would be froze on January 25th and get unfroze on March 25th according to the Tibetan calendar every year. There are fishes in the lake, but most local Tibetans don't eat fish. Tourists travel to Peigutso Lake with a vehicle should take care of your garbage for consideration of the ecological environment of Peigutso Lake Natural Reserve.

The natural environment of Peigutso Lake is characterized by strong sunshine radiation, long sunshine duration, low temperature, and obvious temperature difference between day and night. There is obvious dry season and rainy season in a year. Spring and autumn are widely regarded as the best season for travel to Peigutso Lake in Tibet.
