A general physical check-up is very necessary for seniors planning a Tibet tour in the consideration of personal safety. The natural environment in Tibet is characterized by high altitude, thin air and strong ultraviolet which are not suitable for tourists suffering certain physical problems.
According to the professional doctors, there is larger likelihood for seniors to catch a high altitude sickness and it is more difficult to get it cured due to the degeneration of their somatic function, lower immunity and lower adaptability to the special environment. Hence seniors planning a Tibet tour but suffering the following diseases are not advised to go to Tibet: organic heart disease, obvious arrhythmia or the resting heart rate is more than 100 beats per minute, high blood pressure, blood disease, cerebrovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, bronchial asthma, pulmonary emphysema, active tuberculosis and so on.
In addition, seniors suffering a severe cold or upper respiratory tract infection should not enter into Tibet before these symptoms were completely treated. Seniors who've been diagnosed with high altitude pulmonary edema, high altitude encephaledema, high altitude hypertension, high altitude heart disease or high altitude polycythemia are not suitable to go to Tibet since Tibet has an average altitude of more than 3000 meters.
Except for the regular medicines, seniors planning a Tibet tour should also prepare some medicines for the high altitude sickness. Because of the high altitude and low oxygen content in Tibet, the high altitude sickness has been the largest concern for tourists planning a Tibet tour and it is more necessary to make a good preparation for the possible high altitude sickness for the seniors.
There are various medicines produced for the precaution and relief of high altitude sickness, among which the rhodiala rosea is the most effective one. Besides, seniors planning a Tibet tour should also prepare some glucose for the energy supplement. Medicines for pain relieving, cold prevention, resistance enhancing and medicines for external use should also be prepared.
For the precaution of the high altitude sickness, seniors planning a Tibet tour are strongly suggested to take the rhodiala rosea about 15 days in advance. Brown sugar and glucose would also help to improve the adaptability to the high plateau environment. To get accustomed to the high altitude gradually, seniors should start the Tibet tour from Nyingchi with relatively lower altitude and then head to Lhasa and some other regions after certain adjustment in Nyingchi.
After land in Lhasa, seniors should ensure a good rest first and do everything slowly so as to ease the burden of your heart. Enough water drinking could help with a better adjustment to the dry environment. The obvious temperature between day and night in Tibet requires seniors to take the clothes on and off flexibly. The local food and drinks, such as Tibetan oil tea would provide good for tourists' adaptation to the high altitude. Good mindset is always beneficial. Senior tourists should never be reluctant to leave for the plain if you are suffering a severe high altitude sickness.
