Noted as one of the six great monasteries of Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism, Sera Monastery is located in the northern suburbs of Lhasa City. It enjoys high reputation among the Tibetan Buddhism followers and numerous pilgrims would come here for worshiping on the important religious festivals. Its construction history could be dated back to 1419. Numerous Buddhism classics were collected in its sutra classic pavilion. The ancient murals in Sera Monastery are also of great attraction for visitors especially interested in exploring the history and culture of Tibetan Buddhism.

Buddhism Sutra Debating among Lamas in Sera Monastery

Except for its stylish construction complex and rich collection, Sera Monastery is also noted for its Buddhism sutra debating held on the weekdays. Tourists planning to visit Sera Monastery should note that the Buddhism sutra debating scene is only available between 15:00 p.m. and 17:00 p.m. on the weekdays. For visitors enthusiastic in photographing, the sutra debating among the lamas in Sera Monastery is quite a fresh material. This peculiar religious ceremony leaves visitors deep impression. Though visitors can't understand the lamas' language, the lamas' exaggerated actions and rich facial expressions make visitors be reluctant to leave.

It is said that the lamas participated in the sutra debating would apply their Buddhism knowledge into to the debating completely and express their personal understanding regarding the Buddhism classics. For the lamas in Sera Monastery, the sutra debating provides them the chance to communicate their Buddhism attainments with their fellows. After two hours sutra debating, the lamas would take part in the group chanting.

Buddha Exhibition Deck in Sera Monastery

Though the Buddha exhibition ceremony is not as grand as that in Drepung Monastery and Tashilhunpo Monastery, the Buddha Exhibition Deck is a must-visit spot for visitors in Sera Monastery. Located in the northeast highland of Sera Monastery, the Buddha Exhibition Deck is the best place for taking an overview of the magnificent Sera Monastery. It is well worth to spend some time to climb up to the deck to appreciate the pleasant view composed by the constructions in this ancient monastery. According to the lamas in Sera Monastery, solemn Buddha exhibition ceremony will be held on the deck on important festivals and numerous devout pilgrims would come here to worship the Buddha.

Transportation to Sera Monastery

Tourists making a self-help tour in Lhasa City and willing to pay a visit to Sera Monastery have many choices in transportation. There is bus to Sera Monastery from the down town of Lhasa City. There is no doubt that taking a bus is the most cost effective way to Sera Monastery. In addition, tourists could take a taxi to Sera Monastery. It takes about half an hour driving to get to Sera Monastery from Jokhang Temple Square. The tricycle is also a good choice for visitors willing to enjoy the ordinary street scene in Lhasa City. It should be noted that Sera Monastery would be opened to visitors between 9:00 a.m. and 16:00 p.m. from Monday to Sunday.
