The Significance of Mt. Kailash Trekking in Ngari

Update: Oct. 24th, 2013

Mt.Kailash

Even though more and more tourists are attracted to explore the mysterious attraction of Mt. Kailash, Nagri Prefecture, few of them understand, or know better about this holy land and the significance of Mt. Kailash trekking here. Some of them are just curious about why pilgrims are so devout to Mt. Kailash, some are just interesting of challenging themselves during Tibet tour, and some are just following other people's steps. But they do not check any books of Mt. Kailash or search more about this mountain. However, I think Mt. Kailash should be respected by everyone who comes and prays if you read all articles about Mt. Kailash on Tibettour.com. If you would like to know more, we would also like to tell you more stories.

The significance of Mt. Kailash Trekking - Mt. Kailash Kora

It is an age-old tradition for local Tibetan pilgrims to come to Mt. Kailash for pray and worship every year. They know that they can drop all the sins of their lifetime if they circle once around Mt. Kailash kora. If they circle ten times they will avoid to go to the hell in their 500 times of lives. If they can have Mt. Kailash Kora for 100 circles, they could be the Buddha. Because the birth year of Sakyamuni is the same as his dead year, it is said that pilgrims can get 12 times of merits and virtues each if they have Mt. Kailash kora one more time in this year. That is why you can see many many pilgrims along the way to Mt. Kailash in the Horse Year. Yeah, Sakyamuni was born in the Horse Year. In this year, there will be large numbers of tents at the foot of Mt. Kailash and they will stretch thousands of meters. The scene would be magnificent.

There are two routes of Mt. Kailash kora, one is 56 kilometers long and usually takes about 2-3 days. Most of local Tibetans will spend 1 day only. It is called the outer circle. After you finish 13 times of the outer circle around Mt. Kailash, you are possible to go the inner circle. The inner circle could be finished in 1 day.

In general, you are kindly suggested to have Mt. Kailash Kora from April to October. The ice may be thicker in April, May and June than it in July, August and September. It is hard to describe the felling of walking through the wild white mountains, but it is worthy to experience once at least. It is said that you will find your true heart there.
