Strategies of Photographing Mt. Kailash – Best Season

The period from April to October in every year is the season with most pilgrims at Mt. Kailash, and the climate in this season is relatively more comfortable. In other periods, the area around Mt. Kailash will freeze for ice and snow. And the Mayoula Mountain Pass may be impassable for great snow. Although climate of summer is pleasant, the road may be muddy and vehicle will be trapped easily. Moreover, the rising temperature in summer cause ice and snow thaw. The snow amount on Mt. Kailash is small, only the peak with small amount of snow. The area under the peak is the gray-and-black rock mountain body. Summer is also the rain season of Mt. Kailash. The snow-covered peak often hides in clouds. It is hard to see the real scene of Mt. Kailash in this season. Hence, the best season to photograph Mt. Kailash is spring and autumn. In these months, it is more likely to photograph Mt. Kailash. And it is easier to get suitable light.

Furthermore, on the day of April 15th in Tibetan Calendar in each year, there is a grand ceremony of changing prayer flags at Mt. Kailash. The day is also named "Ngari Gathering Day". It is the most important festival in the Tarchen Village which is located at the mountain foot of Mt. Kailash. The scene is relatively hilarious.

Strategies of Photographing Mt. Kailash – Location

The suitable location to photograph Mt. Kailash includes the highway near Mt. Kailash of National Highway No. 219, the double feet pagoda and prayer flags square, Zhuomala Mountain pass, the way from Lake Manasarovar to Tarchen, Barga Grassland, Laqu River Valley, etc.

If you spend night in Tarchen, you are suggested to choose the best location of photographing Mt. Kailash near Tarchen. In the Tarchen Village, you only can see the peak of Mt. Kailash. Hence, you may find suitable location after walking certain distance. For example, you may photograph the beautiful photos of Mt. Kailash at the Laqu River Valley which is about 8 kilometers away from Tarchen Village. Furthermore, you can photography the beautiful scene of Mt. Kailash at the circumambulation.

Mt. Kailash has the reputation of 'Origin of Water" and "center of the word". The natural scenery and religious humanity meld there. The pyramid shape of Mt. Kailash fully shows its extraordinary sacred features. No matter photograph Mt. Kailash from which viewpoint, people will figure out it immediately. Adding the irreplaceable status in Buddhism, Mt. Kailash has become the symbolic sight spot of Ngari. If you visit Mt. Kailash in Horse Year, pilgrims on the circumambulation of Mt. Kailash come one after the other since the Sakyamuni was born in Horse Year in legends. If you circumambulate Mt. Kailash for one time in Horse Year, it is equal to the merits to circumambulate Mt. Kailash for 13 times in other years. Hence, the Horse Year is also a good time to photograph pilgrims from everywhere in the world.

With the Barga Grassland and Lake Manasarovar in the middle part, the Mt. Kailash faces with Naimonanyi Peak and Lhanag-tso. The snow-covered plateau scenery and beautiful lakes and mountains in Ngari fully show there, and get the favor of travelers and photographers.
