Ride a Bicycle in Tibet

During Tibet tour to Mount Everest, most people would like to appreciate the virgin scenery of this holy land and some of them prefer to have an adventure experience in Tibet. Some tourists is fond of riding a motorcycle to Mount Everest, some are enthusiastic of trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp, some are interested in having Mount Everest ride experience.

Besides other notes of riding a bicycle to Mount Everest Base Camp, here are some reasonable route listed for your reference.

Ride a Bicycle to Mount Everest Base Camp

Day 1 Lhasa - Naiqyong Town (12.9 km) - Nyetang Village (12.3 km) - Qushui (68 km)

It is all asphalt road on the way. The road condition is good. Ride out of the town and then go ahead to Lagong Highway, next go by way of G318 National Highway.

Qushui town stands 3597 meters high. There are lots of restaurants in this small town, but the accommodation condition is not as good as in Lhasa city. But you are possible to buy some food here which you need.

Day 2 Qushui - S307 - Changtang Town (12.4 km) - Yamdrok Lake (33.3 km) - Paidi Village (29.7 km) - Langkatse County (16.5 km)

Ride along G318 National Highway about 9 kilometers we will ge to Yarlung Zangro River Bridge via Qushui Town. Next go by way of S307 highway about 4 kilometers and then we will climb over Ganpala Mountain. There are about 32 kilometers of continuous uphill road of 1192 meters high. The uphill road is cliffy. After climbing to the top we will see Yamdrok Lake quietly appears under the mountain, which is one of the Top Three Holy Lakes of Tibet along with Namtso Lake and Lake Manasarovar (Lake mapam yumco). After 70 kilometers riding we will finally arrive Langkatse County nearby Kongmutso Lake. Langkatse County is 4484 meters high with fine accommodation condition and lots of restaurants.

Day 3 Langkatse County - Relong Village (48.9 km) - Gyantse (54.5 km)

There is continuous uphill road about 30 kilometers long out of Langkatse County. The road is a little cliffy at the mountain pass of Karo-la mountain pass. The elevation of the mountain pass is 5039 meters high.

Then we will go ahead to Gyantse via Naiqyen Kangsang Snow Mountain which is 7191 meters high. On the way we will enjoy Lake Manasarovar (Lake mapam yumco) - the holy lake of Tibet, Zongshan Castle and Palkhor Monastery.

The accommodation condition and food are both fine in Gyantse.

Day 4 Gyantse - Bailang Town (42 km) - Shigatse (55 km)

It is all asphalt road on the way. You could ride the bicycle to Bailang town to have a short break and get some supplies via Gyantse Bridge and S204 highway. After 95-kilometer riding you will get to Shigatse city center.

Shigatse stands 3889 kilometers high, which is the second largest city of Tibet. Therefore the hotels, food, and supplies are much better than other regions.

Day 5 Shigatse - Gyiting Town (60.1km) - Resa Village (45.8 km) - Latse (45.3 km)

After visiting Tashilhunpo Monastery, the largest monastery of Gelug Sect, we will ride a bicycle to Gyiting Town via G318 National Highway. You can get some supplies here. Then go ahead to Resa Village and have a rest.

Tsola Mountain Pass is 4553 meters high standing upon Resa village. After passing through this mountain pass we will ride a continuous downhill path to Latse County. The food and accommodation condition are both okay.

Day 6 Latse - Gyatso Village (61.7 km) - Paipa (20 km)

Ride along G318 National Highway and get to Gyatsola Mountain after a continuous uphill path which is cliffy. After a downhill road we will reach Paipa Village. The supplies here costs relatively higher.

We will buy the tickets of Mt. Everest Base Camp in Paipa Village. It costs 180 RMB each person, 400 RMB each car. Additionally there is other 25 RMB car environmental fee.

Day 7 Paipa - Lulu Inspection Station (6 km) - Dache Village (7 km) - Ula Mountain Pass (26 km) - Tsashisong (40 km) - Rongbuk Monastery (38 km) - Mount Everest Base Camp (113 km)

It takes about 11 hours riding to Mount Everest Base Camp in one day, however, you could stay and spend one night in Tsashisong. The road condition is a little dangerous full of macadam road.
