Recommended Attractions of Shigatse Prefecture

Muzhashan Grotto

Muzhashan Grotto was formed during the period of Tubo Dynasty. The Qyude Monastery is available in the east part of Muzhashan Grotto. There are 5 Buddha statues inside the Muzhashan Grotto.

Location: Muzhashan hillside, Mangpu Village of Latse County.

Sakya Monastery

Sakya Monastery is not only the original place of Sakya Sect, but also the important monastery of Sakya Sect. Sakya imperial court was once splendid and prosperous during the period of the 11th century. It consists of the northern Sakya Monastery and southern Sakya Monastery. There are full of beautiful murals and Buddhist scriptures inside Sakya Monastery. As the large numbers of precious cultural relics, Sakya Monastery is highly praised as the second Dunhuang of China. (Dunhuang is a famous historic cultural city of China and it is well known for the Dunhuang Grotto and Dunhuang Mural)

Location: Sakya Town of Sakya County.

Gangqyen Monastery

Gangqyen Monastery was once established in 1447 and highly respected by Gelug Sect. It once consisted of 8 palaces and 1 large scripture hall, and other small rooms. There is a small plateau lake about 50 kilometers far away from Gangqyen Monastery.

Location: about 45 kilometers far from Shigatse Monastery, Sakya County.

Mount Everest Natural Reserve

Besides Mt. Everest, you will have a chance to enjoy Makalu Peak, Cho Oyu Peak and Lotse Peak in Mount Everest Natural Reserve. All of Lotse Peak, Cho Oyu Peak and Makalu Peak are over 8000 meters high. Mt. Everest is 8844.43 meters high. It is a fantastic experience to overlook the peak of those peaks standing on Zhegula Mountain Pass. In addition, there are many glaciers at the foot of Mt. Everest.

Location: Tingri County.

Rongbuk Monastery

Acted as the highest monastery of the world, it stands about 5100 meters high. It is highly praised as the best place to overlook Mt. Everest. There are some murals on the walls inside Rongbuk Monastery. Some tourists would like to overnight in Rongbuk Guesthouse, not far away from Rongbuk Monastery, as it is the closest accommodation place to Mt. Everest Base Camp.

Mt. Everest Base Camp

In general, it is our final destination on the way to visit Mt. Everest. To protect the natural environment around Mt. Everest, most of tourists are allowed to stay in Mt. Everest Base Camp. It is the closest place to overlook Mt. Everest. There is a height monument of Mt. Everest standing in Mt. Everest Base Camp. The straight-line distance from the monument to the top of Mt. Everest is about 15 kilometers.

Rongbuk Glacier

Rongbuk Glacier is a type of huge glacier about 26 kilometers long and 120 meters thick. There are full of ice tower forests and Ice Bridge in different shapes on the glacier surface.

Location: about 8 kilometers far from Mt. Everest Base Camp.

Xegar Qyude Monastery

Qyude Monastery was originally built in 1385. It was once highly respected and worshipped by different religious sects. There are 4 palaces inside Qyude Monastery.

Location: Xegar Town of Tingri County, about 7 kilometers far from county center.
