According to statistics provided by Chinese Academy of Science, Namtso was attacked by gales stronger than 8-class in 53 days of a year. Most of the gales are happened in winter and spring. The annual average temperature here is 0?, the extremely high temperature is 20.6? while the extremely low temperature is -26.4?. July is said to be the warmest month at Namtso Lake while December is said to be the coldest month. Namtso Lake has an annual precipitation of 281.8 millimeters and most of the rainfall concentrated between May and October. Generally, it starts to snow since late October and the snow season would last to late March of the next year. The snow accumulation period here lasts about 5 months and the thickness of the snow here always reaches 50 cm.

Namtso Lake is located between Dangxung County of Lhasa City and Bango County of Nagqu Prefecture. It is the largest inland lake on Tibet Plateau and also the highest salt water lake above the sea level. It is a world famous pilgrimage center for the devout followers of Tibetan Buddhism. A large number of pilgrims from different regions of the world would come to make circumambulation around Namtso Lake to pray for blessing every year.

Namtso Trekking Tour – Geographical Facts of Namtso Lake

The lake surface of Namtso Lake enjoys an altitude of 4718 meters. Noted as the second largest salt water lake in China, Namtso Lake covers an area of more than 1900 square kilometers with a length of more than 70 kilometers from the west bank to the east bank and a width of more than 30 kilometers from the south bank to the north bank. Namtso Lake is also the highest salt water lake above the sea level. The depth of water in the lake reaches 33 meters at its deepest.

Namtso Lake is mainly supplied by the ice-snow melt runoff of Nyainqen-tanglha Mountains. The clean water in the tributaries around Namtso Lake also flows into Namtso Lake. Tourists making a Namtso trekking tour will find that the water in Namtso Lake is pretty clean and enjoys a high clarity. The sky-blue lake surface would always make you feel that you were in a fairy land.
