As a special region in China, and considering the needs for protecting the Tibet’s tradition, cultural and historical sites and environment, as well as the capacity of transportation, travel facilities and reception system, exact documents are required when foreign guests travel to Tibet. There are four kinds of documents required for foreign tourists who want to make a travel in Tibet.
The first one is the Chinese Visa. It is a must as long as foreigners want to travel in China. You can apply for the Chinese Visa in Chinese Embassy in your country, taking documents material required with you.
The second is Tibet Travel Permit. All foreigners and Taiwan visitors need to apply for it in order to enter Tibet. With Tibet Travel Permit, tourists can travel in most of the areas in Tibet.
The third is the Aliens' Travel Permit. When you are planning to travel to the closed areas in Tibet you need to apply for it after you arrive in Tibet.
The "closed" areas in Tibet Autonomous Region mainly include Qamdo, Tengchen and Riwoche in Qamdo Prefecture, Baksumtso Lake, Bomi and Ranwu Lake in Nyingchi Prefecture, Mt. Everest, Rongbuk Monastery, Sakya Monastery, Palkhor Monastery and Zham Town in Shigatse Prefecture, Tsedang, Samye Monastery, Tombs of Tibetan Kings, Yumbu Lakhang and Trundruk Monastery in Shannan Prefecture, Lake Manasarovar (Mapam Yumco) and Rutog in Ngari Prefecture.
The last one is the Military Allowance (Permit), which you have to obtain if you are planning to travel to some military sensitive areas, such as Mt. Everest, Zham Town, Medog County, Yadong County and Ngari.
