Tips of Traveling along Qinghai-Tibet Highway

The scenery along Qinghai-Tibet Highway

Qinghai-Tibet Highway was constructed in 1950 and completed in 1954. It is originated from Xining City of Qinghai Province and ended in Lhasa city of Tibet region. It is not only the highest and longest asphalt road of the world, but also the shortest road with the best road condition to Tibet. The sceneries along Qinghai-Tibet Highway is distinctive and amazing, including grassland scenery, Gobi desert scenery, salt lake scenery, high mountains and desert scenery, etc. From 1974 to 1985, it is about 2 billion RMB has been invested to construct Qinghai-Tibet Highway. The gravel pavement surface is changed to the bituminous pavement and the width has been changed to 9 meters. It is the highest standard road on the plateau throughout the world. It is the first high-grade highway from other cities of China to Tibet.

Tips of Traveling along Qinghai-Tibet Highway

1.You'd better have some medicines to avoid the high altitude sickness such as Rhodiola rosea. Have a good rest and keep optimistic before Tibet tour starts.

2.Do not do any intense activities in the plateau; otherwise you may cause the high altitude sickness. We usually kindly suggest our guests to have a rest in the hotel immediately when they arrive in Lhasa City and adapt the plateau environment by themselves.

3.Take some skin care products as the air is arid along Qinghai-Tibet Highway.

4.As the road condition along Qinghai-Tibet Highway is better than Sichuan-Tibet Highway, there are more cars and more car accidents along this Qinghai-Tibet Highway. Be careful.

5.If you ride to Tibet along Qinghai-Tibet Highway, it is better to wear a little hat under the helmet. It is dustproof. Sometimes you may use it on your face as the strong wind on the way may hurt your skin.

6.As the completed route of Qinghai-Tibet Highway is far, you are kindly suggested to have a reasonable and acceptable itinerary of your journey. Do not have fatigue driving.

7.The speed should be very slow when you pass through the ice cold area. You'd better pay much attention to the ice on the road surface.

8.Drink more water during the journey. It is helpful to resist the arid weather and thin air. Another useful advice of avoiding High Altitude Sickness is drinking more butter tea.

9.Do no join any activities in local when you arrive in Lhasa at first day. It is better to adapt yourself in the hotel. Qinghai-Tibet plateau is called "the rood of the world". The average elevation is 4500 meters high and the highest elevation is over 6000 meters high. It is characteristic of the lack of oxygen, lower air pressure, arid weather, strong ultraviolet rays and obvious temperature difference between day and night. Some tourists will feel headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, flustered and nervous, nausea, and vomit, etc. They are slight high altitude sickness. The acute mountain sickness is life-threatening.

10.Have a rest if you have some slight symptoms and you'd feel better in general. If you suffer the acute mountain sickness, you'd better ask for help and go to hospital.
