Tips for Travel to Shannan in Tibet – Brief Introduction of Shannan

Shannan Prefecture is the birthplace of Tibetan and Tibetan civilization. The splendid Yalong culture here attracts a large number of visitors both at home and abroad. A series of "First" in Shannan Prefecture made it one of the must-visit places for tourists especially interested in the history and culture in Tibet. Shannan Prefecture is located at the middle and lower reaches of the mainstream of Yarlung Zangbo River. It is quite noted for its rich tourism resources both in nature and culture. The magnificent mountains, rivers and lakes, as well as the picturesque primitive forests and endless grassland are of great attraction for visitors. The famous Yalong Scenic Area contains 7 large scenic zones and 58 scenic spots. Tips for Travel to Shannan in Tibet – Must-visit Spots in Shannan

Shannan Prefecture in Tibet has an average altitude around 3700 meters. Tourists planning to pay a visit here should make preparation for the possible high altitude sickness for you have to climb over few high mountain passes on the way to Shannan from Lhasa. Shannan Prefecture is quite noted for its snow-capped mountains and glaciers. There are more than 10 snow-capped mountains with an altitude above 6000 meters, among which 5 of them are opened to tourists. There are dozens of lakes with varied sizes in Shannan Prefecture, among which the Yamdrok Yumtso and the Lham-Latso are the most noted ones. Yamdrok Yumtso is widely known as one of the three holy lakes in Tibet while the Lham-Latso is quite famous for it plays important role in the selection of the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama.

Yamdrok Yumtso is praised as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. It means jade green lake in Tibetan. The local Tibetans take Yamdrok Yumtso as the earring of the goddess. It stretches more than 130 kilometers among the mountains and it will present different colors under the sunshine in different hours of a day.

Trandruk Monastery is located at the southern foot of Gongburi Mountain on the eastern bank of Yalong River in Shannan Prefecture. It is about 2 kilometers away from Nedong County. Noted as a famous monastery of Gelug Sect, Trandruk Monastery was constructed during the reign of Songtsen Gampo. It is the first Buddha hall in the history of Tibet. It is said that Trandruk Monastery acted as the winter palace of Songtsen Gampo and Prince Wencheng from Chinese Tang Dynasty in ancient time.

Tombs of the Tibetan Kings is a must visit historical site for tourists willing to explore the mysterious Tibetan culture. It is reported that Tombs of the Tibetan Kings is the largest tomb preserved in Tibet. A lot of historical celebrities were buried here, including Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wencheng. Tombs of the Tibetan Kings cover an area around 385 square meters. The tombs of the 29th to 40th kings of Tubo Kingdom and their princess consort and ministers were buried here.
