The climate on Tibet Plateau is characterized by obvious temperature difference between day and night. In winter, the temperature in Lhasa could reach 16 Celsius at the noon and decreased to -5 Celsius before dawn. The temperature in Nagqu Prefecture in Northern Tibet is about 10 Celsius in the daytime and about -10 Celsius in the night. The temperature in Southern Tibet is quite close to that of Lhasa.

Tourists making a Tibet tour in winter would find that Lhasa snows rarely. But the mountain areas and plains with higher altitude are always covered by white snow in winter. Tourists would certainly be surprised by the breathtaking snow landscape at Namtso Lake, which is not closed to tourists in winter 2012. Except for Namtso Lake Scenic Area, tourists are not advised to visit the scenic spots in Northern Tibet for there is always strong wind.

Though Tibet is very charming in winter, the number of visitors is much less than that of the peak season. Make a Tibet tour in winter, tourists don't need to be over worried about the transportation to Tibet. It is much easier to get a train ticket to Lhasa in winter compared to July and August. To better adapt to the special environment on Tibet Plateau, tourists are strongly suggested to purchase a soft sleeper ticket to ensure a good rest before arriving in Tibet.

Generally, there is no much discount in the air tickets even in winter for there are only a few flights to Tibet. Tourists planning a Tibet tour in winter and book the tickets several months in advance might get a 10-20 percent discount. Currently, there are two civil airports in operation in Tibet – Lhasa Gonggar Airport and Nyingchi Milin Airport. Tourists could fly to Lhasa from Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Chengdu and Guangzhou directly. Tourists willing to get to Nyingchi first could only choose Chengdu or Chongqing as the entry city of Tibet tour.

Practical Information for Tibet Tour in Winter – Accommodation Condition

Tourists planning a Tibet tour in winter will have more choices in the accommodation. It is common to enjoy the same level hotel with much lower cost compared to the peak season of Tibet tour. In the peak season, the hotel rooms are always overbooking for large demand. But in winter, the occupancy rate of the guest rooms in different hotels is only about 30 percent to 50 percent.

Tourists planning to join the Tibet adventure tours in winter should note that the guest houses in the sparsely populated areas might be not available in this season since there are only few visitors. Hence, tourists are not advised to visit the remote areas in winter in the consideration of safety.
