Tibet Tour in Summer – Tibetan Festivals

Summer is the high season of Tibet tour for both the natural scenery and climate are at their best state between June and August every year. Except for the fascinating natural landscapes and attractive historical sites, visitors here are also pretty interested in the local festival culture. Tibet Tour in Summer - Tibetan Festivals in June

There are two important traditional Tibetan festivals will be celebrated in June 2013 and both of them will be celebrated in Shigatse Prefecture. The first one is the Gyantse Horse Racing which will be celebrated between June 23rd and 26th, 2013 while the Buddha Exhibition Festival of Tashilhunpo Monastery will be celebrated on June 21st.

The ancient Gyantse Horse Racing Festival has a history of more than 500 years. Various traditional sports competitions play important role in the celebration of the festival. Tourists pay a visit to Gyantse during the horse racing festival will have the chance to witness the interesting horse racing game, archery competition, Tibetan opera performance and Tibetan singing & dancing performances. Actually, the Buddha Exhibition Festival of Tashilhunpo Monastery enjoys the same reputation with the Buddha Exhibition Festival of Drepung Monastery. Both of them attracts a large number of pilgrims come here for worshipping from different corners of Tibet. Tourists here are always impressed by the devout Tibetans praying in front of the giant Thangka of Sakyamuni.

Tibet Tour in Summer - Tibetan Festivals in July and August

Tourists making a Tibet tour in July will have the chance to experience the festival atmosphere at Ganden Monastery during the Buddha Exhibition Festival which will be celebrated on July 22nd, 2013. Except for the giant Thangka of Sakyamuni, visitors here will also have the chance to witness the precious relics which would only be displayed on the important religious days.

In addition, the annual Shoton Festival, which enjoys the same status with the Tibetan New Year for local Tibetans, will be celebrated on August 6th in 2013. The Buddha exhibition ceremony at Drepung Monastery is one of the highlights during the celebration of the Shoton Festival. Pilgrims from different corners of Tibet would collect at Drepung Monastery to worship the giant Thangka of Sakyamuni. After the exhibition ceremony, people in Lhasa will rush to Norbu Lingka to enjoy the traditional Tibetan opera performance. Different noted opera perform teams from various corners of Tibet would collect at Norbu Lingka to give their best performance. The local citizens would spend a happy time with their families and friends on the grassland in Norbu Lingka.

Nagqu Horse Racing Festival will be celebrated between August 10th and 15th in 2013. Tourists making a Tibet tour during this period will not only have the chance to appreciate the breathtaking landscape composed of the endless green grassland, snow-capped mountains and holy lakes, but also have the chance to explore the folk customs of Tibetans living in Northern Tibet.
