Shannan refers to the area on the south of Nyainqentanglha Mountain and Gangdise Mountain, the middle part of Yarlung Zangbo River Valley. The Yarlung River, which is named "Mother River of Tibetan", produced the original civilization of Tibetan. The Yarlung Culture, with the Yarlong River Valley as its center, is the birthplace of Tibetan nationality and cradle of Tibetan culture. Shannan district has many first one in Tibetan history. There is a sentence very popular in Tibet. "there is no fields before Suodang, no king before Nyatri Tsanpo, no house before Yunbulhakang Palace, no scripture before Bagognqiaru." This sentence expressed that the first filed, first ruler of Tibet, first palace, first scripture, first Buddha Hall and so on appeared in this plateau river valley area. Those names which scattered on the holy mountains and lakes are just like the soul of Tibet.

Tibet Classic Tours – Scenic Spots in Shannan

In Shannan, there not only has the first monastery with complete Buddha, scriptures and monks – Samye Monastery, the most famous Qing Pu holy land for practicing in Tibet, the unique Tombs of the Tibetan Kings in Tibet, the last royal palace – Lajiali Palace Architecture in Tibetan history, the only monastery which directed by female living Buddha in Tibet – Sangding Monastery, one of the four traditional holy mountains in Tibet – Ningjinkangsha Peak, but also has the holy lake – Lamulatso (it is said that it can see the past life and present life). And the Yamdrok Lake, which is named Three Holy Lakes with Namtso and Marpan Yumtso Lake, also lie in Shannan. Furthermore, the Jiedexiu ancient town is famous for its Tibetan style apron.

Most of the scenic spots in Shannan are around Zetang, stretching to different directions. You can arrange the tour base on your schedule. If you have enough time, you also can visit the Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, Gyantse and Shigatse.
