Pangongtso is 4350 meters above the sea level. It means "long-neck swan" in Tibetan. It would be completely frozen in the winter. Pangongtso is 12 kilometers away from the county seat of Rutog County, Ngari Prefecture. It s an international lake located at the boundary of China and Kashmir. It has a length of 155 kilometers and a width of 15 kilometers. It is only 5 meters at its narrowest. The lake basin of Pangongtso covers an area of 28714 square kilometers.
The water in the eastern part of Pangongtso (in Rutog County, Tibet) is fresh water while the water in the western part (in Kashmir Area) is salt water. The average depth of Pangongtso is 5 meters and it is 41 meters at its deepest. The famous bird island in the lake is the island which enjoys the highest altitude in the world.

The Bird Island is about 300 meters long and more than 200 meters wide. The island is about 7 meters above Pangongtso. This island is covered by macadam, loess and guano. There is only few short frutex and grass.
