It has a length of 155 kilometers and a width of 15 kilometers. It is only 5 meters at its narrowest. The lake basin of Pangongtso covers an area of 28714 square kilometers.

The water in the eastern part of Pangongtso (in Rutog County, Tibet) is fresh water while the water in the western part (in Kashmir Area) is salt water. The average depth of Pangongtso is 5 meters and it is 41 meters at its deepest. The famous bird island in the lake is the island which enjoys the highest altitude in the world.
