Norbulingka

Recommended Attractions of Lhasa City

Norbulingka

Acted as the summer palace of Dalai Lama in ancient times, Norbulingka is renowned as the wonderful garden of Tibet as of now. There are some palaces, pavilions, and scripture halls, and other religious halls, etc. The Tibetan drama is held at 11:00 in the morning every week except Sundays.

Location: No. 21 of Norbulingka Road, Chengguan District.

Drepung Monastery

It is the largest monastery of Tibet and highly respected by Gelug Sect. There are 7700 lamas in Drepung Monastery as of now. The largest Buddha Thangka exhibition will be held during Shoton Festival. The date of Shoton Festival is calculated every year. In 2013, it is available on June 30th according to Tibetan calendar (August 6th according to Gregorian calendar).

Location: a hill about 5 kilometers northwest far from Chengguan District.

Sera Monastery

It was established during the period of Ming Dynasty. There are about 5500 lamas in Sera Monastery. In addition, there is a celestial burial platform at the back of Sera Monastery. But it is not allowed to visit.

Location: the north part of Sera Monastery Road of Chengguan District.

Mairu Monastery

It was built in AD 817 and also called Mairu Tacang Monastery by Tibetan people. As of now, it is the place where Tibet Drama troupe located.

Location: Chengguan District.

Mosque

The mosque in Lhasa City was established in AD 18th century. It consists of many halls of different functions.

Location: Hui Nationality gathering place, Chengguan District.

Tibet Museum

It is a modern museum in Tibet and consists of the main hall, folk culture hall, and office area. There are two special halls respectively for the northern Tibetan natural resource and the chinaware of Qing Dynasty.

Location: Nation crossing of Norbulingka Road, Chengguan District.

Tibet Revolution Museum

It is the largest public exhibition hall in Tibet and consists of the central hall and 9 exhibition halls. There are ten thousand of pictures, models, statues, and physical subjects, etc.

Location: the east part of Potala Palace, Chengguan District.

Tayepa Cavern

It consists of the strange peaks, huge rocks, limpid streams, green grasslands, caves and monasteries. There are 108 caverns in total. Tayepa cavern is regarded as the holy land of Tibet Buddhism. Many great Buddhist masters have cultivated themselves in Tayepa cavern.

Location: 20 kilometers northeast far from the city center of Chengguan District.

Pabangka

Pabangka is actually a palace standing over a huge rock. The rock looks like a lying tortoise and about 20 meters high. Pabangka is about 2-floor high.

Location: Nyangre Mountain

Nyangre Resort

Nyangre Resort is a quiet and peaceful village and well known for the Nyangre folk custom garden. It is surrounded by Sera Monastery, Kari nun monastery, Pabengang Monastery, and Qugong ruins, etc. There is an exhibition garden of handicraft, entertainment garden, Tibetan dwellings, and Tibetan restaurants, etc.

Location: about 6 kilometers far from the city center, Nyangre Village of Chengguan District.

Qugong Ruins

It covers an area of 5000 square meters. Ten thousand of the ancient tools and large numbers of animal bones have been explored in Qugong Ruins.

Location: Qugong Village, Chengguan District.
