Official Position in Tibet Qamdo History

A bridge in Qamdo Prefecture

Qamdo Prefecture was called "Kang" or "Tsamudo" in ancient times and acted as the center of eastern Tibet region. In Tibetan language, Qamdo literally means "the confluence of two rivers". In Tang Dynasty, Qamdo was under the control of Tubo Dynasty. In Yuan Dynasty and Ming Dynasty, Qamdo Prefecture was named "the Dokhams Region" along with Gantse of Sichuan Province. Qamdo Prefecture and Gantse region of Sichuan Province were managed by Lama and the tribe's leaders who were appointed by the central government. Afterwards, Qamdo Prefecture was governed by Gushi Kham of Mongolia. In Qing Dynasty, Qamdo Prefecture was controlled by the central government again. In a short, most parts of Qamdo history in Tibet histroy  were connected with Qamdo officers. Tusi and Hutu Ketu are both two large famous Qamdo official positions in Qamdo Prefecture in Tibet Autonomous Region.

According to Qamdo history, Qamdo Prefecture was once occupied by 39 tribes. Tusi was one of the most important Qamdo official positions, which Dege Tusi and Lingtsong Tusi were the most famous and more influential.

Official Position in Tibet Qamdo History – Tusi

Dege Tusi was the descendant of one great officer of Tubo Dynasty. Nowadays, it has been successfully succeeded the 53rd Dege Tusi in Qamdo history. During the boom period of Dege Tusi, it once occupied some regions of Sichuan Province, Yushu County of Qinghai Province and some other regions of Tibet, and established a Kingdom. The king is called Dege Emperor. In the early 17th century, Dege Tusi became the political and religious leader approved by Gushi Kham of Mongolia.

Lingtsong Tusi features an age-old and profound history. It appeared in the AD 6th Century. The Gesar King was said to be the 45th or the 46th ancestor of Lingtsong family. He created the boom period of Lingtsong Tusi official position with a very powerful military force. During the boom period of the Lingtsong Tusi, Lingtsong Tusi actually governed Qamdo Prefecture and Yushu County of Qinghai Province. At that time, Dege Tusi was also governed by Lingtsong Tusi. At the beginning of Qing Dynasty, Dege Tusi became much powerful than Lingtsong Tusi.

Both of Dege Tusi and Lingtsong Tusi greatly supported the religions in Qamdo region according to Qamdo history. There were many monasteries of Nyingma Sect, Sakya Sect, Kagyu Sect, Gelug Sect, and Bon Sect constructed in their administrative areas.

Official Position in Tibet Qamdo History – Hutu Ketu

Hutu Ketu is another important Qamdo official position in Qamdo history. Pabala Hutu Ketu is the earliest reincarnation system of Living Buddha of Gelug Sect in Qamdo Prefecture. Pabala is the greatest Living Buddha in Qamdo Prefecture, too.

According to Qamdo history, the 1st Pabala Living Buddha – Deqen Dogye was born in AD 1439 and named Pabala as his religious name by the disciple of Tsongkapa. He learned the Buddhist scriptures a lot and finally became the Living Buddha of Qyangpaling Monastery. In AD 1719 when the 6th Living Buddha was successfully succeeded, Pabala Hutu Ketu was officially appointed by Qing government. The ancestral monastery of Pabala Hutu Ketu – Qyangpaling Monastery was built by the monks of Gelug Sect in 1437. There were some other affiliated monasteries of Qyangpaling Monastery constructed in Qamdo Prefecture, Bome, etc. There were more than 4500 lamas in Qyangpaling Monastery during the boom period of Pabala Hutu Ketu.
