Little-known Attractions in Lhasa City

Naiqyong Monastery

It is the oracle academy of Tibet and highly respected by Nyingma Sect. It is renowned for the gallery which is decorated by colorful and wonderful murals.

Location: the northwest part of Chengguan District, on the way to Drepung Monastery.

Xongbalaqu Resort

It is surrounded by the sacred water and luxuriant grasslands. The scenery there makes people calm down and peaceful in heart. There is a fishpond and apple forests.

Location: Zhenma Village of Chengguan District.

Tsupu Monastery

Tsupu Monastery is the ancestral monastery of Kargyu Sect in Tibet Buddhism history, acted as the birthplace of the Living Buddha system. It is divided to two parts. There are many rare religious treasures in Tsupu Monastery. Every year, the religious festival and activities will be held there.

Location: Duilong Deqing County.

Ganden Monastery

It was built by Tsongkhapa – the founder of Gelug Sect in ancient times. There are full of historic treasures inside Ganden Monastery.

Location: Datse County.

Reting Monastery

It was once acted as one of the monasteries of Kadam Sect, but now it is highly respected by Gelug Sect. It is located where surrounded by hundreds of thousands of cypresses. It is said that there are 108 springs and 108 towers around Reting Monastery. Every year, many religious activities and ceremonies are held there.

Location: Tangu Village.

Yampachen Hot Spring

Yampachen Hot Spring covers an area over 7000 square meters. There are full of different hot springs such as the intermittent spring, geothermal power stations and snow mountains around.

Location: Yampachen Town of Dangxong County.

Namtso Lake

Namtso Lake is one of the holy lakes of Tibet and the 2nd larger salt water lake of China. It is the highest salt water lake throughout the world. There are 5 small islets and 5 peninsulas. It is the ideal habitat of plateau birds. Large numbers of tourists will gather here every year and walk around the lake to pray. Both of the sunset scenery and sunrise scenery are romantic and impress people a lot.

Location: 190 kilometers north far from Lhasa City.

Nyenchen Tanglha Peak

The top of Nyenchen Tanglha Peak is about 7117 meters high. Sacred Namtso Lake is available in the north of Nyenchen Tanglha Peak. It is covered by the snow the whole year round.

Location: Namtso Lake Village of Dangxong County.

Redui Monastery

It was once powerful in Tibet Buddhism history and acted as one of the top 6 ancestral monasteries of Yellow Sect (Gelug Sect).

Location: Qushui County.

Zhuomalakang

It was once the residence of Atisha – the great ancestral master in Tibet Buddhism history.

Location: about 20 kilometers far from Lhasa City.

Xongpa Monastery

It was established against the mountains. It looks very magnificent and beautiful. It has 820 year's history. Xongpa Monastery is highly respected by Red Sect (Nyingma Sect).

Location: Caina Village of Qushui County.

Drigongti Monastery

It is the central monastery of Drigong Kargyu Sect standing on the steep cliff. The celestial burial platform at the top of the Drigongti Monastery is well known in Tibet.

Location: Mozhu Gongkya County.
