Gateway to Tibet – Qamdo in Tibet

Qamdo Prefecture is located in the junction of the border of the eastern Qinghai-Tibet plateau and western Hengduan Mountain Range. The terrain of Qamdo Prefecture is higher in northwest part but lower in southeast part. It stretches approximately 527 kilometers long from the east to the west, and about 445 kilometers long from the south to the north. Qamdo Prefecture covers an area of 108700 square kilometers in total.

Qamdo Prefecture is border on Sichuan Province in east, and close to the Tibet center in west. It is respectively border on Qinghai Province in north and Yunnan Prefecture in south. Therefore it is not only the important hinge of Tibet region, Sichuan Province, Yunnan Province and Qinghai Province, but also the only way which must passed to Nepal and India. The geographic position of Qamdo Prefecture is so important that it is paid much attention by the central government. It features the important strategic location in Tibet region and the important gateway to Tibet, too.

Besides, Qamdo Prefecture is an important tourist port in Tibet region with many attractive Qamdo highlights such as Ancient Tibet Tea-horse Road. Qamdo prefecture is the first destination of Ancient Tibet Tea-horse Road in Tibet region. It also features the confluence scenery of Jinsha River, Nu River and Lancang River. National Way 214, 317, and 318 are all available throughout Qamdo Prefecture. Besides, Bangda Airport is also one of the Qamdo highlights, as it is the only one airport in eastern Tibet.

Qamdo Prefecture is characteristic of cold climate in Tibet region. The sunshine duration is long, and the solar radiation is strong. The best time to travel to Qamdo Prefecture is from May to October. It is also the good time to travel to other regions of Tibet.

Gateway to Tibet – Accommodation in Qamdo in Tibet

The accommodation condition in Qamdo Prefecture is better than other places in Tibet region, such as Namtso Lake, Mt. Everest Base Camp, and Tingri County, etc. Both of the better hotels and the hostels are available in Qamdo Prefecture in Tibet. But the water quality is not as good as in flat area. The water service is provided in both of the hostels and hotels in Qamdo Prefecture, but the hot water is only provided regularly in a day in the hostels.

The better hotels in Qamdo Prefecture are Kangsheng Hotel (located in the east part of the passenger station of Qamdo Prefecture, about 5 minutes' walking, 0895-4823168), Friendship Hotel (0895-4846888), Mianyang Hotel (0895-4825331), and Jindao Hotel (0895-4824999)

Guangming Hostel is located opposite to Kangsheng hotel, the hot water is only provided regularly.
