Nyingchi Prefecture lies in the middle reach and the down reach of Yarlung Zangbo River. In the west it adjoins Lhasa City. In the southwest, it adjoins Shannan Prefecture. In the east, it connects to Qamdo Prefecture. In the north, it adjoins Ngari Prefecture. In the south, it borders on India and Burma.
