The latitude of Lake Manasarovar is 4588 meters, which is one of the highest fresh water lakes in the world. The deepest part in the Lake Manasarovar is 81 meters, and the perimeter of it is about 90 kilometers. The Lake Manasarovar is located on the southeast of Mt. Kailash, about 400 square kilometers wide. The Bon Religion in early period named it "Mapam Yumtso". It is said that there are many treasures in the lake bottom in legends.
On one side of the lake, there is a small monastery, named Jiwu Monastery. It is said that the Padmasambhava ever stayed in the cave of this monastery. Although this monastery is small, the buildings distribution is almost same as the Potala Palace. If you do not want to circumambulate around the lake, you can climb up the hill of Jiwu Monastery to see the blue holy lake. You also can see some nameless birds on the banks of the lake. Sometimes, you may come across some loyal religious believers.
There is a natural hot spring next to the small village of Jiwu Monastery. Local people developed it into an open air small bathroom. So, you may smell the sulfur in the river valley.
From Hur Area to Lake Manasarovar, you must first arrive in the Barga, and walk toward south area, the whole journey is about 60 kilometers. It is not very hard for trekking. If want to take bus from Hur Area to Lake Manasarovar, it is not very hard in tourism high season. While in common seasons, you may have to wait for several days. If you come from the Mt. Kailash, you can take the cars which passing by in Darchen or Barga. The Jiwu Monastery which is located on the northwest of Lake Manasarovar and the Hur Area are main transit place to Lake Manasarovar. But there is a distance between the Hur Area and Lake Manasarovar; you can trek to there.
If you have Tibet trekking tours to Lake Manasarovar, you can live in the small village at the mountain foot of Jiwu Monastery. The way to Pulan must pass through this village. There are two nameless hostels which run by Tibetans. The hostels charge 30 RMB per person. This small village consists of 10 earth houses, and without restaurants. The hostel on the south side can provide vegetables and rice. You are kindly suggested to bring some solid food in your Tibet trekking tour.
