Why it is not too cold in Tibet in winter? There are mainly two reasons.
1. Strong Sunlight and Long Sunshine Time
Tibet is the place where the solar radiation is the strongest. In Lhasa , the annual solar radiation reaches 195 kilocalorie per square centimeter. It is twice as much as in Chengdu, which is of the same latitude, and 1.7 times of that in Shanghai. Annual sunshine duration is 3005 hours, 2.4 times as in Chengdu, 1.5 times as that in Shanghai. Lhasa is called “sun city”. The main reason is that the atmosphere is thin and clean, contains less water vapor. There is not much heat loss when sunlight shines through the atmosphere. So the temperature rises fast after the sunrise.
2. Surrounded by High Mountains and of High Altitude
From north to south, Kunlun Mountain, Tangula Mountain, Nyenchen Tanglha, Gangdisê Mountains, Himalaya Mountains lie through Tibet. In winter, the cold air is obstructed by the northern mountains.
