Mysterious Holy Lakes in Tibet – Namtso Lake

Namtso Lake, located between Damgxung County and Bange Conty, is about 240 kilometers away from Lhasa. With an altitude of 4718 meters, Lake Namtso has a length of 70 meters from the east to the west and a width of 30 kilometers from the north to the south. It is noted as the second largest salt water lake in China and also the highest large lake above the sea level. Namtso means Heaven Lake in Tibetan. It is highly respected as a holy lake by the follower of Tibetan Buddhism. The picturesque natural landscape composed of the beautiful lake, fascinating grassland and magnificent Nyenchen Tanglha Mountain attracts a large number of tourists both at home and abroad every year.

Mysterious Holy Lakes in Tibet – Mapam Yumtso

Mapam Yumtso, also noted as Lake Manasarovar, is located on Ngari Plateau which is more than 2000 kilometers away from the holy city Lhasa. It is a holy lake enjoys high status among the followers of Bon, Buddhism and Hinduism. For the devout pilgrims, the water in Mapam Yumtso could purify their heart and wash away the evil creature. A large number of pilgrims from different corners of the world would come here for pilgrimage between April and October every year.

Yamdrok Yumtso is only about 100 kilometers away from Lhasa. It covers a total area of 638 square kilometers with a length of 130 kilometers from the east to the west and a width of 70 kilometers from the south to the north. Mysterious Holy Lakes in Tibet – Dangra Yumtso

Dangra Yumtso is located in the world famous Depopulated Zone in western Qiangtang Prairie. With an area of 1400 square kilometers, Dangra Yumtso is the third largest lake in Tibet. With an altitude of 4600 meters and be pretty far away from the populated regions, Dangra Yumtso has been one of the most rarely visited lakes in Tibet. It is highly respected as the largest holy lake by the followers of Bon – the primitive religion in Tibet.

Baksumtso Lake is respected as the holy lake by the followers of Nyingma Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Located in Nyingchi Prefecture with pleasant climate and beautiful scenery, Baksumtso Lake enjoys an altitude of 3538 meters. It has been one of the must-visit spots for tourists visiting Nyingchi. Tourists making a self-driving tour to Tibet along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway could visit Baksumtso Lake conveniently.

Mysterious Holy Lakes in Tibet – Lhamo Latso

Among all the holy lakes in Tibet, Lhamo Latso might be the smallest one, but it also enjoys important status among local Tibetans. Located in Gyiacha County in Shannan Prefecture, Lhamo Latso enjoys an altitude of more than 5000 meters. It is said that the Lhamo Latso could indicate the direction of the soul boy in the reincarnation system in Tibetan Buddhism. In another word, Lhamo Latso plays important role in finding the spiritual leader for local Tibetans.
