Double Lakes Special Region in Winter

Double Lakes Special Region is located at the northwest of Nagqu Prefecture, in northern Tibet. It is a county-level special region especially established for the exploitation of the Northern Tibet Depopulated Zone. It covers a total area of 0.1 million square kilometers (including the Shenzha County) and has a population around 20,000 so far.

Natural Environment and Climate of Double Lakes Special Region

Situated at the lake basin area of Qiangtang Plateau, Double Lakes Special Region enjoys large scale and wide grassland. The terrain in this special region is higher in the north and lower in the south. Most of the land here is covered with dry and cold semi-desert. Double Lakes Special Region is known as the highest county above the sea level for its high altitude. It is researched that the average altitude of this special region is more than 5000 meters.

The Kunlun Mountains, Tangula Mountains, Hoh Xil Mountain and Dongbuller Mountains are famous mountains in the Double Lakes Special Region. There are also numerous lakes distributed in the special region, among which the Dogetso Lake, Dorsodongtso Lake, Merichetso Lake and Yagentso Lake are the most famous ones. The lake surface of all the lakes here are more than 4700 meters above the sea level and the lake surface of the Merichetso Lake enjoys en elevation of 5400 meters.

Double Lakes Special Region enjoys a plateau sub-frigid dry monsoon climate which characterized by cold weather, thin air, long winter and short summer. There is no distinctive spring, summer, autumn or winter here. According to statistics, the annual temperature difference in Double Lakes Special Region is relatively larger than the daily temperature difference. There is no real frost-free day here and there is gale in 250 days in a year. The annual sunshine duration here is around 2628 hours and the annual precipitation is only 150 millimeters. The natural disasters happen frequently in Double Lakes Special Region, including the wind damage, snow disaster and the frost hazard.

Natural Resources of Double Lakes Special Region

The Double Lakes Special Region is not suitable for human inhabitance, but it is rich in mineral resources. It is researched that this region has large reserves in boron, gulch-gold, ferrochromium, salt, jade, mica, amethystine and so on. There are also abundant wild animal resources in Double Lakes Special Region, such as the Tibetan kiangs, black-necked crane, Tibetan antelopes, snow leopards, snow cocks, blue sheep, foxes and bald eagles. In addition, the valuable medicinal plants are also widely distributed in this region, including the ephedra, safflower, stichopus japonicus, and high plateau codonopsis pilosula and so on.

Transportation of Double Lakes Special Region

Double Lakes Special Region enjoys a pretty severe geographical environment and awful climate condition. It is about 1000 kilometers away from Lhasa and about 700 kilometers away from Nagqu Prefecture. The construction of the Lhasa-Banga singlet line asphalted road with a length around 300 kilometers greatly improved the transportation condition of Double Lakes Special Region, Shenzha County and Nyima County. But the left 700 kilometers distance between Nagqu and Double Lakes Special Region still need further improvement for the gravel road is frequently influenced by the bad weather condition.
