Update: Jun. 18th, 2012

Tibetan Clothes

Tibetan clothes are mainly characterized by long sleeve, longuette, thigh boot and jewelry. The pattern and character of Tibetan clothes are greatly decided by the special natural environment, the pattern of production and life in Tibet Autonomous Region. The original pattern of Tibetan clothes is not greatly changed since the traditional culture and customs in Tibet are well preserved with the development of history.

Tibetan Clothes – Culture Structure

Tibetan clothes are of significant cultural connotation and connotation is becoming perfect gradually with the development of history. They always present different levels and ideas, as well as different structures. Different Tibetan clothes in different regions of Tibet display different culture and lifestyle, and there are even specific dress institutions in some special regions.

Most of the Tibetans make living on nomadism and agriculture. Fat is another characteristic of Tibetan clothes. To adapt to the mobility of nomadism, the clothes must be fat and flexible. The fat clothes also leave certain space for local Tibetans to store some food, such as butter, Tsanpa and tea while living in the wild. Sometimes, the local females even put their little child in the fat clothes so as to keep him/her warm.

Tibetan Clothes – Cold Weather on Tibet Plateau

The characteristics of the Tibetan clothes are greatly due to the high elevation, cold weather and severe natural environment on Tibet Plateau. Tibet has a pretty cold winter and cool summer. The extremely high temperature in summer is less than 30?. It also should be noted that there is a big temperature difference in Tibet. Tibetans have to keep warm in the morning and evening. Living on the roof of the world, Tibetans have to protect themselves from the extremely cold weather in the winter. Hence, the Tibetan clothes must be thick and warm.

The climate of Tibet is relatively cold compared to that of some other regions in China. It has a small annual temperature difference and a big temperature difference between day and night. The average annual temperature of Lhasa is 10-15? lower than Chongqing. At the regions with an elevation of higher than 5000 meters, it is more than 10? during the day time but lower than 0? during the night. Hence, Tibetan clothes must be of good warmth.
