History of Tibetan Clothes

Tibet was under the rule of Chinese Yuan Dynasty. The Tibetan culture was greatly influenced by Yuan Dynasty since they have close relationship in every aspect of culture. The history of Tibetan clothes is also of close relationship with Yuan dynasty.

Yuan Dynasty settled different levels of ministers to rule the local regions and the ministers wear different clothes to distinct their social level. Ministers of different official ranks would wear Tibetan clothes with different ornamental design and wear different patterns of hats. Besides, the steward, accompany and servant would also wear certain patterns of clothes and wear different hats. The clothes of the local Tibetans in the pasturing areas in northern Tibet keep some Mongolia clothes characters since they had a lot of connection in history.

History of Tibetan Clothes – Characters in Yuan Dynasty

The Tibetan clothes in Yuan Dynasty are greatly influenced by religion. Buddhism factors were integrated into the manufacture of clothes. Strict social levels among monks and priests are formed with the development of Tibetan Buddhism. Buddhism culture was applied to the manufacture of clothes, shoes and hats in various forms and methods. Local Tibetans started to use certain pictures and symbols to express certain meanings.

History of Tibetan Clothes – Characters in Ming Dynasty

Ming Dynasty is more closely connected with Tibet in history. The central government settled ministers to administrate the Tibetan zones in Tibet, Gansu Province, Qinghai Province and Western Sichuan Province. The superior nobles in the Tibetan zones were frequently awarded with silks and some other valuable clothes. In addition, the textile industry, which strengthened the base of clothes development in Tibet, was also greatly developed. Besides, the tea-horse trading between central China and Tibet also promoted the development of Tibetan clothes. Large amount of clothes and spinning products were brought into Tibet.

History of Tibetan Clothes – Characters in Qing Dynasty

Qing Dynasty united the most nationalities in the history of China. During this period, different cultures of various nationalities were greatly promoted and became steadier than ever. The characters of Tibetan clothes in Qing Dynasty are of significant research value. The culture structure, art features, appreciation of beauty and the making process of Tibetan clothes developed to its peak season.
