Brief Introduction of Tibetan Clothes

Tibetan clothes culture has a close relationship with the natural environment and climate condition on Tibet Plateau. The production and lifestyle here also do a great influence on the form and development of Tibetan clothes. The heritance and tradition of Tibetan clothes culture are greatly related to the Tibetan history and Tibetan culture. It reflects the intelligence and appreciation of beauty of the ancient nationality lives on Tibet Plateau.

Brief Introduction of Tibetan Clothes – Self-development

The rich and varied Tibetan clothes have a long history. It is recorded that the Tibetan clothes have their own characteristics around the first century. The long sleeves and waistband have been the basic characters since then. It is said that local Tibetans were capable to weave their tent and clothes with ox hair and wool during the reign of the ninth Tsanpo. In 1970s, people found clothes of Songtsen Gampo and a pair of shoes of Princess Wencheng in Jokhang Temple. That dress was made up of superior material and was also characterized by fat and loose. That pair of shoes were also made up of superior material and presented an exquisite workmanship.

The most ancient Tibetan clothes were unearthed in the Neolithic culture relic in Qamdo Prefecture. 50 decorations of Tibetan clothes were unearthed at that site, including some rings, necklaces, bracelets, pearls and so on. Those decorations indicated that the ancient local aboriginals already had an appreciation sense of beauty since ancient times. The Tibetan clothes had formed the characters early from then on.

Brief Introduction of Tibetan Clothes – Culture Exchange

Tibetan clothes culture was also influenced by other nationalities, such as Han nationality, Man nationality and Mongolian due to the culture exchange. The color and making process of the clothes were greatly promoted while the basic factors were well preserved. Hence, the basic characters of Tibetan clothes are well inherited and keep presenting the traditional Tibetan culture.

Tibetan clothes have different styles. Local Tibetans involved in different careers would wear different clothes to meet their demand. Obviously, the farmers and herdsman would wear different styles of clothes. Concerning the social status, the common civilian, the Buddhists and the nobles in ancient Tibet would wear quite different clothes.
