Lhasa to Shigatse - South Way

Update: Oct. 25th, 2012

Karo-la

The south way from Lhasa to Shigatse is about 340 kilometers via Gangpala Mountain, Yamdrok Lake, and Gyantse County. The middle road on the way is not as good as the two sides of the road, beginning and ending. Actually south way of Lhasa to Shigatse is not as good as the north way, but it is also worth as attractive sceneries on the way.

Lhasa to Shigatse - South way

When we drive to Qushui county from Lhasa, macadam appears instead of asphalt road. It is not easy to fall asleep in the car because you do not want to miss anything ourside of your car window, the villages, streams, farmers working their fields, and the yak and sheep dotted hills and mountains.

Then we will climb over the Gangpala Mountain which is a relatively dangerous road. Attention! Protect your lady teammates in your group as they are usually afraid of the cliff on a side.

And then you will finally enjoy the Yamdrok Lake, the very beautiful scenery. Your tour guide may have you stop at a little roadside where you can step inside to take some photos for just a donation of a few RMB or whatever you feel like. It only takes few minutes but feel very fun.

When I stand in front of Yamdrok Lake, I know I will recommend you that it is a 'must-see' on the way to Shigatse. The grounds are home to the tallest stupa, housing a ridiculous number of small temples. I feel it like a real hike, especially at that altitude, and it is well worth the climb to the top of it, where you could have a great view of temples and sceneries.

After that, we will reach the amazing Karo-la glacier, which is about 5560m high. The efflorescent mountains are challenge your sight view and imagination. Finally we will get to Shigatse city via Gyantse.
