Don'ts in Tibet Tour - Clothes

Please do not wear the hat ever used by others during Tibet tour. Do not wear hat when sleep, or wear two or more hats at the same time. Do not wear clothes inside out.

Do not stride over or step on others' clothes, or put own clothes on others'.

Do not wear sack and similar articles. Do not tie hemp rope on waist except for the person who is in mourning. The two ends of waistband can not be tied in front of body.

Women can not dry clothes, especially trousers, at the places where people pass by.

Don'ts in Tibet Tour - Social Etiquette

Even between best friends, it is tabooed to put hand on other's should and touch other's head when meet.

When stay at home, do not speak inauspicious words and curse someone with bestial words.

When drink wine in public occasion, you should first use ring finger to dip some wine and flick toward sky for three times. It means worshipping Buddha, religion and monk.

Don'ts in Tibet tour – Daily Life

After relatives going out, do not sweep the floor immediately. When the husband goes out, the wife should not dress up.

After coming into house, men should sit on left side and women should sit on right side.

Do not light cigarette with the fire of oil lamp in the house or in scripture hall.

When go out for business and hunting, it is tabooed to come across people with empty back basket, empty bottle and empty pocket.

Don'ts in Tibet Tour – Giving Birth to Baby

If there is sick or women who just gave birth to baby, Tibetan will place fire, hang red cloth or build a mound of stones, stick cypress branch at the gate because Tibetans think that the evils brought by others will harm the sick and the puerperal. It is tabooed that guests come into the room or shout, especially after noon and at night.

If guest come afar needs to come into the house, the host will make a fire at the gate. The guest would stride over the fire before coming into the room.

In the past, Tibetan women can not give birth to baby in the house. They will give birth to baby out of tent or in lair.

Don'ts in Tibet Tour – Funeral

In the period of funeral, guest should not laugh out, sing songs or dance. In some districts of Tibet, Tibetans do not wash head, buy new clothes and wear ornaments during the funeral to express their mourning for the dead.

If there is someone passed away, the neighborhood and the whole village will not hold happy events and any entertainment for 49 days to show respect to the dead. The family of the dead will not kill in 49 days.

It is tabooed to see the scene of celestial burial. If you come across celestial burial, please behave yourself. Please do not take photos, or the consequences would be too ghastly to complete.
