Ancient Tea-Horse Road was formed to transact the tea and horse business for Han people and Tibetan people in ancient times. It was acted as the key traffic hinge on the way to Tibet. The section in Tibet was originated from southern part along Yarlung Zangbo River and ended in Qamdo Prefecture by way of Nyingchi Prefecture. In Qamdo Prefecture, it was divided into the southern route and northern route again. They were named Yunnan-Tibet Ancient Tea-hose Road and Sichuan-Tibet Ancient Tea-horse Road.
Yunnan-Tibet Highway is approximately 1930 kilometers long. There are not many ups and downs along the way. Generally speaking, about 39-kilometer long section of Yunnan-Tibet Highway is over 4000 meters high, and about 239-kilometer long section is over 3000 meters high along Lancang River.
