Zhangmu Port – Brief Introduction

Zhangmu Port is located on the sloping fields of middle section of the Himalayas, the border of China and Nepal. It is at the altitude of 2300 meters. The Zhangmu Port is a small town built upon mountain. The scenery of Zhangmu Port is very beautiful. The modern buildings and some ancient wooden frame structure houses alternately distribute on the two sides of the twisting mountain road.

Zhangmu Port - Features

The Zhangmu Port is in subtropical zone. The climate is humidity, and scenery is pleasant. The buildings in Zhangmu Port mainly are two or three floors small buildings. The materials of these buildings are stones, plank, as well as masonry-concrete. Because the Zhangmu Port was built upon mountain, there are many street corners in the town. The distribution of buildings in the town is very random, with obvious level. The buildings in Zhangmu Port are connected with streets and stone stairs. On the roof of many buildings in Zhangmu Port, there are small gardens, iron roof, various prayer flags and lucky trees which add more colors to the town and make it become more obvious from surrounding green mountains and white clouds. As a busy trading port, Zhangmu Port is bustling with traffic and pedestrians. On the both sides of the road, there are over hundred shops selling various products. In Zhangmu Port, you will see various products from India and Nepal. In addition, you can see colorful Nepal TATA goods van on the street. Except for Tibetans and people of Han nationality, there are many foreign visitors and merchants from India and Nepal.

The end of the street is China Customs. If you want to visit Nepal after your Tibet tour, you can pass the customs there.

Zhangmu Port – Geography

The Zhangmu Port is the only inland trading port in Tibet. The over thousand people of Sherpa in Tibet mainly live there. In Zhangmu Port, there are over 3000 permanent resident population, over 20 trade companies. The annual trading volume has broken through 20 million.

The Zhangmu Port is about 120 kilometers away from Kathmandu which is the capital of Nepal. Hence, many foreign travelers would like to have Tibet tour from Kathmandu or leave Tibet from Zhangmu Port. In the area of Zhangmu Port, there is Mount Xixabangma which is the 14th highest mountain in the world, flourishing virgin forest, distinctive glacier and dozens of large and small lake, as well as many historical and cultural relics.

The Zhangmu Port is 736 kilometers away from Lhasa and 120 kilometers away from Kathmandu. It is an important passage for the communication of politics, economy and culture between China and Nepal. For the hinterland of Nepal, the unimpeded China and Nepal Highway promoted the development of Zhangmu Port border trading market. In terms of geography, the China and Nepal Highway connects Zhangmu Port with Shigatse, Gyantse and Lhasa. The Zhangmu Port is with convenient transportation, infrastructures of energy and communication, complete administrative institutes of customs, banks, industry and commerce, joint inspection, public security, etc.
