Burang Port

Burang Port – Brief Introduction of Burang Port

Burang Port is one of the Tibet entry ports in Burang County, located in Southeastern Ngari Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region. It borders on India in the southwest and borders on Nepal in the south. Burang Port is one of the main ports which plays important role in the foreign trade of Northern Tibet Autonomous Region. It is about 1300 kilometers away from Lhasa, 398 kilometers away from Shiquanhe Town and 1455 kilometers away from Karghalik in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Actually, the State Highway G219 (also noted as Xinjiang-Tibet Highway) connects Karghalik, Burang and Lhasa together.

Burang Port has a trade port history of more than 500 years. Its unique folk customs, ancient dressing culture, fascinating natural landscapes and cultural landscapes made it one of the most noted tourism region in Tibet. The foreign trade enterprises in Ngari Prefecture established their embranchments here. There are more than 100 stores managed by businessmen from other parts of Tibet, India and Nepal at Burang Port. The foreign businessmen could only enter into Burang Port between July and September for there is no good-conditioned highway heading toward Burang Port in Nepal and India and the poor road would always be blocked by the heavy snows in the other seasons.

Burang Port – Trade and Tourism

Located at the valley area surrounded by Namu-Ahbi Peak and Nani Snow Mountain, Burang Port enjoys a temperate and pleasant climate. The humid air flow from Bengal made it much more humid than the other dry regions on Tibet Plateau. There is also relatively rich precipitation at Burang Port.

Located at the Southern Slope of Himalayas, Burang Port is situated at the juncture of China, Nepal and India. Burang Port was officially opened in 1954 and then closed in 1962. It was opened again in 1992. It is recorded that the annual number of entry-exit persons is more than 30,000 and there are also hundreds of foreign tourists enter or exit Tibet via Burang Port each year. Burang Port acts as an important port for a large number of international tourists, including a certain number of pilgrims willing to make kora around Mt. Kailash from India and Nepal.

Burang Port enjoys relatively complete basic facilities compared to the other Tibet entry ports. It is served by State Highway G219 and ensures convenient highway transportation for businessmen and tourists. Tourists planning to join the Tibet adventure tours to Ngari Plateau should note that Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasarovar enjoy important status in both Buddhism and Hinduism. Mt. Kailash is highly respected as the center of the world and it attracts a large quantity of followers of Buddhism and Hinduism here for pilgrimage through Burang Port from Southeast Asia and western countries.

Tourists making a Tibet tour through Burang Port will have the chance to witness an international picture composed of tourists from different countries and businessmen from Nepal and India. The Nepali girls with colorful clothes and porters would always leave tourists' deep impression. It should be noted that tourists enter/exit Tibet via Burang Port are required to apply for special permits, including the Military Permit.
