Qulong Monastery is located on north of Wardgonjeh Mountain. It was built upon mountain. It backs on to grand Wardgonjeh Snow Mountain and faces vast Warka Grassland.
The Qulong Monastery is one of the earliest monasteries of Gelug Sect. In 1393, 36 years old Tsongkapa, founder of Gelug Sect, led other eight apprentices to Warka Quelong to practice and propagate disciplines of Gelug Sect. At that time, the master of Warka Zong, Tashi Lunzhu, greatly believed in Buddhism and voluntarily been the benefactor of these nine persons.
The master of Warka Zong pushed for building a place to perform Buddhism rites for the nine master and apprentices. Consequently, a scripture hall was built up with permission of Tsongkapa. Until 1969, this scripture kept in its original form. Later, the Qulong Monastery became the foothold of Tsongkapa, to propagate disciplines of Gelug Sect at the areas of Warka. With the development of Gelug Sect, the Qulong Monastery decided to build the main monastery of Gelug Sect – Ganden Monastery. It is said that Tsongkapa ever prayed at north of Qulong Monastery for the construction of Ganden Monastery. In order to commemorate Tsongkapa, people built a Buddhism pagoda at the site where Tsongkapa ever prayed.
The price of entrance ticket of Qulong Monastery is 30 CNY per person. The Qulong Monastery will open at 9 o'clock in the morning and close at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. In general, it will cost about one and a half hour to enjoy the whole monastery. There is a precious pearl Thangka was preserved in a room on the second floor of the main hall of Qulong Monastery. Sometimes, the room of keeping this Thangka is closed for fewer visitors. If you come across this condition, you are suggested to find the key keeper to open the door.
