Signs and Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness

According to Medilexicon's medical dictionary, Acute Mountain Sickness (Altitude sickness) is " a syndrome caused by low inspired oxygen pressure (as at high altitude) and characterized by nausea, headache, dyspnea, malaise, and insomnia; in severe instances, pulmonary edema and adult respiratory distress syndrome can occur."

As you know, Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a common symptom of skiers, hikers, climbers, which always caused at high altitude places without enough oxygen and air pressure. It is also depends on our individual susceptibility, which means not everybody will suffer this pain when they go up to higher elevation area.

For example, most visitors who travel to Tibet will suffer some symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness, but most of them will generally overcome it through acclimatization in several hours to several days.

What are the Typical Signs and Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness?

When people ascend to about 3500m by train, car, or plan, most of them will feel not well. They probably typically feel bad headache, very exhausted at every moment, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, abnormal pant/breath and heartbeat, loss of appetite, and insomnia.

When the signs and symptoms change to serious, people will probably suffer the severe Acute Mountain Sickness called pulmonary edema and cerebral edema. Both of the two severe signs and symptoms will lead to death.

When do the Signs and Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness Occur?

The mild signs and symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness is usually happened when you up to about 2400m.

The severe signs and symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness are not usually occurred immediately when you climb the high mountains. It could be occur in 36 hours.

How to Distinguish Signs and Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness

The typical signs and symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness are not horrible, but the severe symptoms do. Pulmonary edema and cerebral edema are fatal to people.

People who suffer a cold will aggravate the disease if they don't get the treatments timely.

So the best way to distinguish the signs and symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness is careful with a little case even the cold or cough when you are in high mountains. There is no official reasons caused it, but we should take care of ourselves.
