If you lucky enough you will have a chance to enjoy a local festival in Shigatse and witness joyous performance given by local people. There are various festivals in Shigatse, such as Gtsang New Year (also called "Farmers' New Year") on the first day of November in Tibetan Calendar, Gyangtse Horse Racing Festival usually held in June, and Buddha Exhibition - one of the most important festivals in Shigatse.
In addition, it is said that Shigatse is the birthplace of Tibetan opera which is regarded as the treasure of Shigatse.
People living in the countryside in Shigatse will have 4 times of New Year Festival in a year. They are respectively held in the New Year of International calendar, lunar calendar, Tibetan calendar and the Tibetan calendar of Tsang (Southwest of Tibet).
The New Year of Tsang is regarded as the important one of people living in Chu River. During the festival, dancing and singing programs will be held uninterrupted. The most performances are compiled by local people themselves telling the story of theirs and the ancestors.
Shigatse is also well known by Tibetan opera, as it is the birthplace of the founder of Tibet opera (1365-1455). The famous Tibetan operas are Princess Wencheng, Langsa Girl, and Nuosang Prince.
