Dalai Lama is the leader of Gelug Sect (Yellow Sect) of Tibet Buddhism. According to Mongolian language, Dalai literally refers to the ocean and Lama literally means the wisdom. Therefore Dalai Lama refers to the "oceanic wisdom", which has been conferred to Sonam Gyatso – the 3rd Dalai Lama by Altan Khan – the leader of Mongolian Turmot Tribe. In general, Dalai Lama is said to be the reincarnation of Avalokiteshvara, and Panchen Erdeni is said to be the reincarnation of Amitabha.

The 8th Dalai Lama

The 8th Dalai Lama is named Qyangpai Gyatso (1758-1804). During the government of the Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty, Gurkha people (of the Kingdom of Nepal) invaded the southern Tibet but beat by the Qing Army finally. The 7th Panchen Lama fled to Lhasa city. In order to manage Tibet affairs well, the 8th Dalai Lama and the 7th Panchen Lama signed an agreement including officer, justice, currency, taxes, traffic, religion, and military, etc.

The 9th Dalai Lama

The 9th Dalai Lama is named Longdo Gyatso (1805-1815). He only lived for 11 years. He was the son of one local Tusi - Official Position in Qamdo Histroy. After the death of the 8th Dalai Lama, he was confirmed to be the 9th Dalai Lama in Potala Palace in 1808.

The 10th Dalai Lama

The 10th Dalai Lama is named Tsuchen Gyatso (1816-1837). He only lived for 22 years. He was born in Litang in Sichuan Province. In 1822, he was confirmed to be the 10th Dalai Lama by the 7th Panchen Lama in Potala Palace. In 1834, he took the 7th Panchen Lama as his teacher. When he was 22 years old in 1837, he suddenly died in Potala Palace.

The 11th Dalai Lama

The 11th Dalai Lama is named Kaizhu Gyatso (1838-1855). He only lived for 18 years. He was born in Kangding Region of Sichuan Province. He was confirmed to be the 11th Dalai Lama in Potala Palace in 1842. The 7th Panchen Lama held the ceremonies for him when he was moved into Potala Palace.

The 12th Dalai Lama (1856-1875)

The 12th Dalai Lama is named Tsenlye Gyatso (1856-1875). He only lived for 20 years. The ceremony of collecting the 12th Dalai Lama was held by the officers of Qing Dynasty and then he was confirmed to be the 12th Dalai Lama in 1860. When he was 20 years old in 1875, he suddenly died in Potala Palace.

The 13th Dalai Lama

The 13th Dalai Lama is named Tudeng Gyatso (1876-1933). During the period of his government, Tibet was invaded by British invaders. Then he fled to Outer Mongolia. After the 2nd agreement of Qing Dynasty and British invaders, a part of sovereignty of Tibet has been got back. And then the 13th Dalai Lama got back to Tibet. Afterwards he fled to India again as he conflicted with the officers of Qing Dynasty. After the Revolution of 1911, he got back to Tibet. With the protection of the United Kingdom, he had started to manage Tibet affairs for 40 years.
