Skeleton Wall is full of skeletons, located in Biru County of Nagqu Prefecture of Tibet Region. The wall is made of large numbers of skulls of human beings, which the folk customs is related to the Tibetan Celestial Burial. Skeleton Wall is the great contribution of

funeral cultural of human beings.

Skeleton Wall - Brief Introduction

It is situated in Biru County of Nagqu Prefecture of Tibet Region, about 370 kilometers away from Naqu. Along the Nu River you will see Pala Scripture Tower, one of the Top 5 largest scripture tower which is unique and peerless throughout the world.

The Skeleton Wall was piled up by more than 1000 skulls covering an average of 30 square meters, which is the only one can be seen in the world. The monasteries, pictures, paintings, sculptures, and Thangkas along the road will be greatly appreciated, along with the exquisite wild natural environment and relatively more comfortable climate.

Skeleton Wall - Mysterious Culture

Few people have been come to touch this mysterious Skeleton Wall in Naqu Prefecture, as it may be the only one celestial burial platform which preserved the skulls well in Tibet Region now. The attraction of numerous of vultures flying over the celestial burial platform creates a mysterious world, which attracts lots of people to look for in their lifetime.

People may not have the chance to watch the ceremony of celestial burial, but we may escort you to the place which held the ceremony after finished.

Skeleton Wall - Legend

There are two legends. One is that a boy watched 3 people been killed when he was 8 years old. He fled to the 5th Dapu Living Buddha and was ordered to be the master of celestial burial. He collected all the skeletons and put them from the northeast corner in order. When he was 50 years old, the skeletons was piled up to the southwest corner.

Another saying is that the custom of colleting the skulls was created and carried out as one monastery's rule since the 13th century. It was aimed at warning people to do good things when they were alive, because whoever you are you would be died and be a skeleton in the future.

Skeleton Wall - Celestial Burial

Though it is very mysterious regarded by lots of people of the world, but it is truly exist in Tibetan people's daily life. It is related to local people's life style, and the plateau natural environment as well, it is the unique way of Tibetans living with the nature.

Regarding to the celestial burial, the dead body is the food of the immortals. The vultures will follow the smell of the mulberry smoke to come here eating the body. Tibetan people hope their spirit could be taken to the nirvana through this way.
