High Altitude Sickness Precaution – Notes on High Plateau

1. Every visitor who just reach high plateau will appear different degree short breath, chest distress, dyspnoea and some other oxygen deficiency symptoms. But it can not prove that you can not adapt to the high plateau. If you can correctly protect yourself, these symptoms will be better or disappear after two or four days.

2. If you go to Tibet by flight, the symptoms of high altitude sickness will appear about 12 or 14 hours later. So, please do not do energetic exercise when you just reach high plateau, but take a rest immediately. Or, you need more time to adapt to the high plateau condition once you feel the symptoms of high altitude sickness.

3. People often use oxygen inhalation to alleviate the chest distress which caused by high altitude sickness. Of course, oxygen inhalation can temporarily alleviate chest distress, short breath, dyspnoea and some other symptoms. But these symptoms will appear again once you stop inhaling, and it will delay the time you adapt to high plateau. If you symptoms of high altitude sickness are not very serious, you are not suggested to inhale oxygen, so that you can adapt to the high plateau condition quicker. The slight high altitude sickness will recover without treatment. If you inhale oxygen freely, you will rely on it.

4. After reaching high plateau, you are suggested to have more carbohydrate and foods which can be easily digested; drink more water to keep enough water content in your body; do not eat too much at dinner. You had better not smoke and drink alcohol, but eat more fruits, vegetables and some foods with rich Vitamin.

5. You should pay attention to avoid over fatigue, and keep daily life in order. For the first few days when you just reach high plateau, you should not have bath too frequently to avoid cold. The cold is often the main cause of high altitude pulmonary edema.

6. During the time on high plateau, the tourism activities should not be too frequently, to add burden to your body. When just reach high plateau, you should not walk fast, or run, or do physical labor. You can gradually increase activities after one week.

7. There is one thing must be noted that if the symptoms of high altitude sickness become more and more serious, especially very obvious when you are quite after you coming into high plateau, you should inhale oxygen immediately and go to hospital. The hardly see high altitude pulmonary edema and high altitude cerebral edema patients should inhale large amount of oxygen, and sent back to lower altitude places.

8. People who keep doing exercise with good physical quality may appear light high altitude sickness, which will recover very soon. Before coming into higher altitude places, one should do one or two days' adaptive training. Visitors should not come into the places where higher than 5000 meters without preparation.
