Tibet Group Tours – Notice for Altitude Sickness

When dreaming of joining a Tibet group tour, many people worry about “altitude sickness” at the same time. Regarding to this worry, tourists need to learn and treat “altitude sickness” scientifically.

General Knowledge of Altitude Sickness

Professor Weijun Chen, the director of Tibetan Research Institution of Mountain Sickness and Cardiovascular Disease, says that all the hypoxia disease caused by environment of low oxygen on the plateau are called “altitude sickness”. Experts point that out that, cold, fever, over fatigue are the triggers of altitude sickness.

According to the time people entering into the plateau, altitude sickness falls into two categories, acute and chronic. The acute altitude sickness generally refers to the disease caused by the low oxygen content on the first or few days when people first come to the plateau. The patients have the symptoms like headache, palpitation, nausea and vomiting or feeling dizzy, week, flustered and exasperated. According to clinical features, altitude sickness falls into three types: acute altitude reaction, acute pulmonary edema and acute Plateau encephalopathy. The latter two may be coexist.

How to Prevent and Relieve Altitude Sickness

How to prevent altitude sickness? Experts suggest that before a few days of entering into Tibet, people need to take a good rest, not to do strenuous exercises. After arriving at the plateau, do not take heavy things or run. Be sure to have a good rest on the first day to Tibet, not to join any social activities or other outdoor activities.

Meanwhile, in the first three days, tourists are advised to take medicines like nifedipine, Nuodikang Soft Capsule and Rhodiola rosea Soft Capsule. It is proved many times that it plays role in preventing altitude sickness.

Experts also suggest that, patients with heavy cold, fever, acute or chronic lung disease or serious cardiovascular disease, pregnant women and children under 3 years old had better not to travel in plateau regions.

If tourists feel uncomfortable in Tibet, having a rest and oxygen uptake is the first step. Then if the situation doesn’t turn better in 3 to 4 hours, the patients have to be sent to hospital nearby to treat.
