Actions Taken to Protect the Environment

To protect the environment, many actions are taken. It first introduces environment protection supervisor in the construction of China; it first signed letters of responsibility for environment protection with local environment protection institution; it first put forward the target of “keep good quality of the engineer and protect the environment”; it first transplant grass sod in large area; it first open migrate passages for wild animals.

The railway passes through Hoh Xil and Changtang national grade natural reserves. In order to protect the wild animals, 25 migrating passages for wild animals are constructed alongside the railway. Electronic surveillance system of the general headquarter of Qinghai-Tibet Railway construction company shows that large quantities of Tibetan yaks migrant freely from the migrating passages alongside the railway. According to the survey, the general office of Environment Protection state that, the frozen earth, vegetations, wet land environment, natural landscape, water qualities are effectively protected after the construction of Qinghai-Tibet Railway. In a word, the plateau ecological environment is not obviously influenced.

Investment on Environment Protection

Due to the high importance placed on the environment protection, the investment reaches 2 billion Yuan, takes up 8% of the whole investment of the project.
The general director of Qinghai-Tibet Railway Construction, Chunfang Lu says that, the investment on environment protection takes up so large a proportion that it is the first record in the history of China’s construction. When get the information that the railway will pass through their town, secretary of the Party committee worried that it may damage the most beautiful grassland on in North Tibet. After the section of railway was completed, 80 thousand square meters grassland were artificially planted. Although some grassland is taken up when building the railway, the total area has not decreased. Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the place of origin of Jvcuan River, and also the important center of mountain region species. The ecological environment is primitive, unique and fragile. The State Environmental Protection Administration, Ministry of Land and Resources and Ministry of Railways organized experts to make deep research alongside the route of the railway before starting the project. They made specific plans and prepare more than 1 billion Yuan on environment protection.
