Tibet Festival – Tibetan Bathing Festival

Tibetan Bathing Festival is a special festival which would be celebrated in July according to the Tibetan calendar. Tourists planning a Tibet festival tour during this festival could witness the magnificent bathing landscapes.

Legend of Tibetan Bathing Festival

It is said that there was a terrible epidemic happened in Tibet in an autumn and a large number of Tibetans and livestock died of the disease. The disaster shocked the immortals in the heaven. To rescue the people out of the disease, Avalokitesvara appointed Seven Fairies to take the polished water to the Tibet. All the rivers and lakes in Tibet are cleaned by the polished water. The diseases would be eliminated if they take a bath in the water. Hence, the terrible epidemic was suppressed.

After that, Tibetans would celebrate the Tibetan Bathing Festival between July 6th and 12th according to the Tibetan calendar. People would take a bath in the rivers or lakes with their family members during the Tibetan Bathing Festival. Sumptuous Tibetan style food and drinks would be brought to the tent under the shade of the trees. People would spend the festival in the temporary tent with their friends and relatives.

Celebration of Tibetan Bathing Festival

The main celebration of Tibetan Bathing Festival is bathing. The snow-broth is of rich natural constituents after it flowed into the rivers and lakes through the mountains with precious herbal medicines. Take a bath in the rivers and lakes is beneficial to the physical health.

When the bathing of the Tibetan Bathing Festival starts, the aged Tibetans would wash their heads and body by the bank of the lakes or rivers. The younger Tibetans would jump into the water while the children would have fun in the water. Besides, the female Tibetans would also take a bath in the water without scruple.

Tibetans would take a bath in the water everyday during the Tibetan Bathing Festival. They would not only wash their body, but also wash their clothes and their beddings. Tibetan Bathing Festival has become a universal sanitation activity in Tibet.
