The Palkhor Monastery is located in southwest of Gyantse County, the mountain foot of Zongshan. It is named "Banguo Deqin" in Tibetan language, which means "auspicious wheel and happy monastery". The Palkhor Monastery is a typical Tibetan Buddhism architecture which perfectly integrated pagoda and temple, with pagoda in the temple and temple in the pagoda. The architecture style of the Palkhor Monastery fully represents the monastery architecture style in the period from end of 13th century to middle of 15th century. The Palkhor Monastery is the only completely preserved giant architecture with memorial monument characteristics. Hence, the Palkhor Monastery has the reputation of "King of Pagoda in Tibet". The Palkhor Monastery consists of hall, auspicious Duomen Pagoda, Zhachang and wall.

The Palkhor Monastery has two distinctive features. The first feature is one monastery with three sects which can be peaceful existence. The Palkhor Monastery belonged to Sakya Sect. Later, the force of Kadampa Sect and Gelug Sect penetrated into Palkhor Monastery. At first, the three sects repelled each other. At last, they comprised to each other. Hence, the Palkhor Monastery is with Sakya Sect, Kadampa Sect and Gelug Sect. Consequently, the enshrined articles and architecture style of Palkhor Monastery absorbed three sects' characteristics and learned widely from three sects' strong points.

Visit Palkhor Monastery in Gyantse Tour – Transportation to Palkhor Monastery

In Shigatse, there are scheduled buses to Gyantse from 08:00 to 19:00 which will depart every hour. The price of bus ticket is 20 CNY. The Palkhor Monastery is located in the downtown of Gyantse. If you can see the white pagoda or white wall, you can reach the Palkhor Monastery sonly by walking along the pathway.

Visit Palkhor Monastery in Gyantse Tour – Tips

The entrance ticket of Palkhor Monastery is 40 CNY for each person. The Palkhor Monastery will be open from 9:00 in the morning to 16:00 in the afternoon.

If you want to take your camera with you when you visit the Kumbum Pagoda in the Palkhor Monastery, you will be charged 15 CNY extra fees. But it is really worthy if you can take pictures of million Buddha status.

You can reach the top of Kumbum Pagoda if you come in it from the west entrance and walk along the staircase.
