Few people visit Sakya Monastery during Tibet tour not because it is not good or popular, but it is on the middle way to Mt. Everest Base Camp from Shigatse. Sakya Monastery is located about 50 kilometers far from Latse County, Shigatse. If you have enough time to visit Mt. Everest Base Camp during Tibet tour, Sakya Monastery may be added into your itinerary. If not, it may be taking place by Tashilhunpo Monastery. But anyway, Sakya Monastery is worthy visiting during your trip in Tibet as it is the main monastery of Sakya Sect - Tibet Buddhism and it is highly respected by local Tibetan people.

Tips of Sakya Monastery

Sakya Monastery is located 130 kilometers southwest far from Sakya County and it was the 1st monastery of Sakya Sect founded in AD 1073 in Tibet Buddhism history. Sakya Monastery is highly appraised as the "little Dunhuang of China".

It was divided into two parts, the south part and the north part by Zhongqyu River. The North hall of Sakya Monastery was once acted splendidly during a period of Song Dynasty, but it was destroyed during the time of the Great Cultural Revolution. Only the south hall of Sakya Monastery has been saved and preserved till now.

The south hall of Sakya Monastery was established in AD 1268 across from the Zhongqu River. It covers an area of 14700 square meters and shapes like a square. There are two city walls around and they are used to be defense. Also, there is a moat in front of Sakya Monastery. The city walls were painted black, white and fuchsia that representative of colorful Sect - Sakya Sect.
