Update: Oct. 11th, 2013

Karo-la Glacier View

With the intensifying global warming, the glacier view is more and more precious for human beings. Noted as one of the most famous glaciers in Tibet, Karo-la Glacier always leaves deep impression for visitors who've been here. It is reported that Karo-la Glacier might even disappear in the future for Tibet is getting warmer under the influence of the global warming. As a professional Tibet tour operator, Tibet Tour would like to provide relevant tips for visiting Karo-la Glacier for tourists' reference.

Karo-la Glacier is located between Langkazi County (Shannan Prefecture) and Gyantse County (Shigatse). It is about 71 kilometers away from the ancient Gyantse County. It is quite close to the famous holy lake in Shannan Prefecture - Yamdrok Yumtso. Karo-la Glacier leans against the south slope of the Jinning-kangsha Mountain. It covers a total area of 9.4 square kilometers. There are two magnificent glacier tongues stretch several kilometers to the east and west respectively. Karo-la Glacier is one of the must-visit sites for tourists making a Tibet tour to Shigatse from Lhasa. Also, Karo-la Glacier is one of the two most frequently visited glaciers included in the regular tour routes in Tibet.

Located between Shannan Prefecture and Shigatse Prefecture, Karo-la Glacier is widely regarded as a scenic spot of Shigatse. The upper part of Karo-la Glacier shapes like a hat with gentle slope and its lower part is mainly composed of two large glacier tongues. The glacier tongue stretches to the east enjoys a width of 750 meters and a length around 3 kilometers. Its tail end enjoys an altitude around 5230 meters. The glacier tongue stretches to the west has a width around 1.5 kilometers and a length of 4.5 kilometers. Its tail end is about 5140 meters above the sea level. Visitors who've been to Karo-la Glacier are always deeply impressed by the obvious natural "scratches" in the front part of the glacier tongues. These "scratches" enjoy a width of 10-20 centimeters, a depth of 8-10 centimeters and a length of 10 meters.

The main peak of Karo-la Glacier is widely noted as Neching Kamsang Snow Mountain, and the glacier is an important part of the magnificent Snow Mountain. Neching Kamsang Snow Mountain has an elevation of 7200 meters. It is the most important holy mountain for local Tibetans in Shigatse Prefecture. Also, it is one of the four great snow mountains in middle Tibet. Neching Kamsang Snow Mountain is the eastern source of Nianchu River. An ancient legend goes that there are 116 glaciers on this Snow Mountain and those glaciers cover a total area around 120 square kilometers.

The Viewing Deck of Karo-la Glacier is the best place to appreciate the ice towers in the south of Karo-la Glacier. Hence, the viewing deck is also the best photo shooting site. For tourists willing to take a close look of the fascinating glacier, it is necessary to prepare enough cold-proof stuff before heading to there. Tourists suffering mild high altitude sickness are not suggested to get too close to the glacier in case of getting worse. For the protection of Karo-la Glacier, tourists are strongly suggested go back to your vehicle and leave the glacier soon since the carbon dioxide released by the vehicles will intensify the temperature rising here.
