Tibetan Traditions – Tibetan Women's Ornaments

Tibetan Garwu

Tibetan women are like to wear various ornaments on their neck. In Tibet traditions, there are various necklaces made of fossils of seashells, necklaces made of colorful beads, fossils of seashells, turquoise and so on, and various ornaments made of bone, treasure, wax beads and so on. There is a delicate mental box hanging in the middle of these necklaces. It is named "Garwu".

Tibetan Traditions – Garwu

The shape of Garwu is various. In general, it is silver product or copper product. The surface of Garwu is inlayed with agate, turquoise and carved with various patterns. In the Garwu, there is Buddha Statue, sacred thing of Lamas' or amulet and so on. The Garwu is the deformation of Buddha box. It has become necessary ornaments for Tibetan women since it can protect them.

Tibetan Traditions – Waist Ornaments

Tibetan women are like to wear waist ornaments. The waist ornaments almost are metal products in wide strip shape and leather products, as well as single silver chain or several silver chains with one side tied on the waist and the other side hang key, small bell, ear picker and so on. On the waist ornaments, there are patters of lotus, peacock, deer, auspicious eight things, six long life patterns and so on which means auspicious and safe.

Tibetan Traditions – Xueji

Xueji is also named "Xiaosang" in Tibetan language. It is favorite ornament of women in pasturing areas. It was the hook on milking pail. Later, it gradually became ornament with practical and decorative function. The Xueji is in the shape of small iron anchor, about 1 inch long. It is almost silver product, with turquoise, agate and some patterns on it. The women in pasturing areas love to wear it no matter staying at home or going out. They will tie it on the waist or hang in front of left belly. Because its function inclines to decoration, the manufacture is very exquisite.

Tibetan Traditions – Prayer Beads

The prayer beads are necessary religious ornaments in Tibet. The 108 prayer beads are put together by a string, hanged on the neck or coiled up on wrist. Among Tibetan farmers and herdsmen who believe in Tibetan Buddhism, no matter old or young, no matter male or female, will put the image of Buddha, or Buddshim scriptures, or some other amulets in a delicate box or prescious Tibetan wool bag, and tie it on waist or hang on neck to get the bless of Gods. At the same time, it is distinctive Tibetan ornament.
