Tibetan History Origination - Monkey Legend

One of the disples of Arya Avalokiteshvara is said to be a monkey. When he studies during his journey along the way, he found there were a lot of devils in snow-covered plateau. Then he stopped and decided to help the villagers to eliminate the evils. After he settled in a hole, a lady came to him and said he would like to marry him. The monkey was worried and did not know how to do. If he refused, this woman would marry the King devil and let the King Devil as well as we their later children to destroy this highland. Then the monkey asked the Arya Avalokiteshvara for help. Arya Avalokiteshvara told her to marry that girl because it was better for him and even for other people.
After they married, lots of monkeys were born and get married with other girls there again. Even the monkey could fight with the devils but he had no idea about the food for their generations. There were lesser and lesser food in the mountains. At this time, Arya Avalokiteshvara taught him the way to plant. The monkey learned how to plant the fruit trees and how to cultivate the land from Arya Avalokiteshvara and then let his generations to learn, too. It was a great way to reproduce their lives. You may guess who Tibetan people were, right? Yes, Tibetan people were said to be the later generations of this hero monkey, and they believed it indeed. There was a monkey hole in Shannan Prefecture. Lots of Tibetans will gather there together to worship their ancestors.
It is interesting that it is familiar with the saying of Darwin Theory, isn’t it? We all know our ancestors are the apes and monkeys, but we know it few hundreds of years of Tibetan monkey history. Even though the story is different, or they are different monkeys, it is funny and interesting to hear during Tibet tour, right?
