Daily Diet of Tibetans - Zanba

The most characteristic staple food is zanba, made of powdery highland barley. Highland barley is grown in the oxygen deficient environment, which has health protection function. It is cheap. Tibetan people often eat zanba with buttered tea. It is said that once an old man had cancer, he ate zanba everyday when he was in hospital. His cancer disappears at last by miracle. After that, even the doctors in the hospital began to eat zanba frequently. Zanba is the saviour for the poor. When meeting the beggars, the Tibetan people will treat them with zanba. Pilgrims would not get hungry only if they take enough zanba with them. They can eat zanba with water. zanba are also used in many religious rites.

Daily Diet of Tibetans - Meat

Another important food in Tibetan people’s diet is meat. Generally, Tibetan people only eat Yak beef, mutton and pork. They never eat donkey meet or dog meat. And they almost do not eat fish because in some areas there is water burial. Many Tibetans eat raw yak beef, the frozen and air dried ones are their favorite. The raw yak beef is very healthy to eat as they are not artificially-grown. The yaks are reputed “boat of the plateau”. Once being the primary means of transport, yaks are able to bear and endure the oxygen deficient environment. The yak beefs can be made to many Tibetan specialties.

Daily Diet of Tibetans - Tea

Tibetan people often drink teas. There are mainly three kinds of tea in Tibet, buttered tea, green tea and sweet tea. The butter is refined from the milk of the yaks. People add salt and tea leaf (different from tea leaf in other places) into the butter, then stirring. Previously, people stir them in a traditional butter barrel, while presently, most people use machines to do this. Green tea is made form the tea leaf imported from India. There was no sweet tea before; it is spread to Tibet from India and Nepal. It has been ameliorated by Tibetan people. Now the sweet tea has milk, Indian tea leaf, white sugar or brown sugar in it. All the three kinds of tea have some health protection function. Tea is inseparable from daily lives for Tibetan people.
