Three Most Noted Highways to Tibet – Qinghai-Tibet Highway

With a total length of 1937 kilometers, Qinghai-Tibet Highway stretches to Lhasa from Xining via Chaka, Dulan and Golmud. Noted as the highest and longest asphalt highway above the sea level, Qinghai-Tibet Highway enjoys an average altitude of more than 4000 meters. Among the four highways to Tibet, Qinghai-Tibet Highway is the shortest and best highway to Tibet. Except for the sections at Kunlun Mountain Pass and Tanggula Mountain Pass, most sections of Qinghai-Tibet Highway are relatively flat. Therefore it is much safer to drive to Tibet through the Qinghai-Tibet Highway compared to drive to Tibet through the other three highways.

Tourists planning to drive to Tibet along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway should note that the Kunlun Mountain Pass has an altitude of 4837 meters and the Tanggula Mountain Pass has an altitude of 5800 meters. It is necessary to prepare some medicines effective in the precaution of the high altitude sickness in case of need during the journey. There are few inhabitants in the nearly 1000-kilometer section between Golmud (in Qinghai Province) and Ando County (in Tibet), tourists should prepare enough solid food and beverage.

Three Most Noted Highways to Tibet – Sichuan-Tibet Highway

The North Sichuan-Tibet Highway enjoys a total length of 2412 kilometers and its highest point is about 4916 meters above the sea level. The South Sichuan-Tibet Highway has a total length of 2149 kilometers and its highest point is 4700 meters above the sea level. For consideration of safety, tourists planning to drive to Tibet along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway are strongly suggested to choose the south route for it is relatively shorter and it enjoys lower elevation.

The natural scenery along Sichuan-Tibet Highway ranks first among the four highways leading to Tibet. Tourists could enjoy a breathtaking natural picture composed of high mountains covered with snow and primitive forests, glaciers and rivers. It should be noted that the road condition of Sichuan-Tibet Highway is quite limited and it is even worse in the rainy season. It is reported that best seasons to drive on Sichuan-Tibet Highway are May, August and October.

Three Most Noted Highways to Tibet – Xinjiang-Tibet Highway

Xinjiang-Tibet Highway starts from Karghalik in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and ends at Gaer Town in Tibet. With a total length of 1535 kilometers, Xinjiang-Tibet Highway climbed over 10 mountain passes, among which the highest Jieshan Mountain Pass enjoys an altitude of 5248 meters. It is measured that 130 kilometers of Xinjiang-Tibet Highway are more than 5000 meters above the sea level. Hence, Xinjiang-Tibet Highway is widely noted as the highest highway above the sea level. The best season to drive to Tibet along the Xinjiang-Tibet Highway is the period between May and September. It is dangerous to drive on this highway in the winter season due to the snow weather. Most sections along Xinjiang-Tibet Highway are rare populated regions. Tourists planning to make an adventure tour along this highway should prepare necessary food, drink, medicines and cold-proof stuffs in advance.
