The Highways to Tibet, 2014

With the open of Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival, many self-driving enthusiasts also plan to drive to Tibet in 2014. Here are some highways listed for your reference for your Tibet tour schedule.

Qinghai-Kang Highway

Qinghai-Kang Highway originates from Daotang River besides 109 National Highway to Riwoche of Qamdo Prefecture by way of Yushu County, Hainan County and Golo County of Qinghai Province. It connects to the northern section of Sichuan-Tibet Highway in Qamdo prefecture. As a matter of fact, Qinghai-Kang Highway was the way that passed through by Princess Wencheng of Tang Dynasty. It is also one of the sections of famous Tang-bo Ancient Road. Qinghai-Kang Highway is 1150 kilometers long, and about 120km long of which is asphalt road. The wild nature scenery along the way is breathtaking and worth.

Qinghai-Tibet Highway

Qinghai-Tibet Highway originates from Xining of Qinghai Province to Lhasa available along 109 National Highway climbing over Kunlun Mountain, Fenghuo Mountain, Tanglha Mountain, and Nyenchen Tanglha Mountain. Acted as the main highway lead to Tibet with the best road condition, it is 1980 kilometers long. Qinghai-Tibet Highway is maintained by workers everyday and normally suit for all types of vehicles. The rough section of Qinghai-Tibet Highway is only about 20 kilometers long.

You should note that there is a high speed bump after you leaving Golmud. If you leave Golmud in the early morning, you will reach here in the late evening. You should be careful.

Sino-Nepalese Highway (China-Nepal Highway)

Sino-Nepalese Highway (China-Nepal Highway) originates from Lhasa to Kathmandu along 318 National Highway. It passes through Shigatse, Tingri County, and Nyelam County. It is 900 kilometers long, and the section in China of which is 750 kilometers long.

The rough road of the section in China of Sino-Nepalese Highway (China-Nepal Highway) is only about 170 kilometers long and the road condition is actually better than before. The section from Nyelam to Zham Port is fixing now. You should be careful because there are many turnings.
